Bolens 1669L Drive shaft part# 1758196

Hi Everyone,

My drive shaft just snapped while mowing the lawn. Are there replacements or anything available?

It seems like it might be welded to the engine crank. Am I SOL for replacing this?

Its Bolens part# 1758196

If it is welded at the engine end, it is actually probably welded to the engine stub that comes off with 2 bolts. Still not normal, some one tried a short cut to fix it. As for the shaft they can be made buy a competent drive shaft shop. Recently a fella with a 1669 had one built on another forum.

That yellow U joint with the hole in it looks like it came from a Bolens snow thrower, I see it broke, did it break in middle or by input shaft ? Was it one piece or two piece I cant tell ? If you get a new made get a two piece driveshaft made they were better, sliding was in middle not on the input shaft.

As a few others have pointed out, you can get a new shaft made. Does your 1669 have the original Briggs and Stratton or has it been repowered?
In any case, with the broken driveshaft welded onto the stubshaft, you'll probably have to get both new. Oh and maybe a new debris screen - I suppose you can't get the existing one off either with it welded.
Ray (rjmartinny) turned me into a guy who deals in Bolens parts, Pete Duff. Pete's family used to be Bolens dealers back in the day and Pete still deals in Bolens parts. Earlier this year he made me a driveshaft (two piece) for my HT23 for a very affordable price. It's working very well for me. PM me or Ray if you want Pete's contact info.
That stubshaft (or engine extension as it's called on the Bolens parts list) should be available as a Briggs & Stratton part number too.
Good luck getting it all apart.

Update. Took the shaft off of the motor end.

IT looks like it was welded to snowblower ujoints. the terrible weld on the hydro end broke.

Thank You.

It has the original Briggs vanguard twin 16hp in it. I am actually emailing back and forth with Pete about it now. He is very helpful and has rebuild parts for me in the Past.

i had a mower deck pully rebuilt because the key way got stripped out and he had a steel sleeve put in, a new keyway cut and he even painted it bolens green before shipping it back.

Re: Bolens 1669L Drive shaft part# 1758196

UPDATE: 7/1/2018

Pete at [email protected] hooked me up with a brand new custom built drive shaft for my Bolens 1669 hydro. This connects the 16hp Briggs vanguard v twin to the eaton11 hydro.

I sent Pete my old basket case driveshaft and and provided a couple simple measurements and Pete made it happen! He even painted it Bolens green! It fit like a glove and it's stronger than the original and should outlast the machine. It is balanced very well. My tractor has never run so smoothly. HE was able to re-use my stubshaft that the old shaft was welded to by adding a woodruff key /bolt

He also provided me with a new fan with aluminum hub that blows tons of air over the tranny. I am impressed with the quality of work. This is the 2nd part i have sent to him to have refurbished/rebuilt and i recommend him to anyone who has an old Bolens they want to keep running.
