Have mercy!! Deck Rollers

I need to redo my tired/missing rollers on my 60 inch Sunstar deck. 25$ a piece x 9 is a tough pill to swallow for rollers ( 1678043SM). Amazon,eBay, Jack's, partstree are all about the same. Any suggestions? Suck it up? Thanks

Re: Have mercy!! Deck Rollers

I bought a long section of Delrin and drilled the center on my metal lathe and made my own.

Re: Have mercy!! Deck Rollers

I have replaced mine with Boat ramp rollers that are far cheaper, and just as good. A band saw can be used to cut to size. Quick search came up with $11.86 here.

Its a small price to pay for killer stripes. Even $12K commercial machines cannot compete with a good Simplicity 60"

Simplicity 20 GTH
Scag SW61
Snapper Pro SW30 52"
Toro 7/24 Snow
HUS 570 BTS
Stihl FS94K

Re: Have mercy!! Deck Rollers

I was replacing at least one plastic roller every year if not two. I had my neighbor turn some rollers out of Dogwood that I soaked in burnt engine oil and add oilite bushings. That was over 15 years. The only one I have had to replace was one that came lose and I backed over it with the deck. Give it a try I think you will be supprized how long they last.

DonF, wish I had seen your post earlier. Sounds like a super idea! I just bought a 5 foot long by 3" diameter (which turned out to be 3 1/8") plastic rod. I'm thinking it will be necessary to turn the rod down to something smaller than 3".

What was the diameter you had those wood rollers turned to? My old ones on my 60" deck are about 2 3/4", but I was thinking the diameter of the 1678043 replacements would be close to 3". Never could find out what the actual diameter of the 1678043 p/n is. Anyway, it looks like anything much bigger than 2 3/4" will have trouble clearing the mower housing sheet metal? Did you have any problem in that regard? Thanks.

Re: Have mercy!! Deck Rollers

mmm. My left roller popped off recently; I found it and put it on temporarily with a hairpin cotter pin. Well, the pin is gone and so is the roller. So shame on me for using the "ok-temp" fix. Now I need to get a new roller.

So no helpful input, but figured I'd offer camaraderie to the situation....

As much as they cost, I'd be walking the yard tomorrow.

Re: Have mercy!! Deck Rollers

My rollers on my PK deck is wood. I need to replace them. I was wondering what kind of wood was used. Dogwood sounds like a good choice...

Gum is a good choice. Its stranded grain means its almost impossible to split. Consider using a 5/8 PVC or CPVC tubing as a bushing.

White oak would also be a good choice for rollers. Used extensively in boat building, its resistant to wear and exposure.

Re: Have mercy!! Deck Rollers

Type in what you want on Amazon. You might find something that fits.. And possibly cheaper.
