Simplicity Landlord 20 DLX Broken Wheel Spindle

Without bad luck I'd have no luck at all.

I bought what I believed to be a well-maintained 2000 Landlord 20 DLX with around 680 hours on it. After a whopping 15 minutes mowing, the front left wheel spindle snapped and turned the tractor into a trike. I've never seen this happen before and was fairly dumbfounded.

I have a new spindle ordered with delivery expected later this week.

Am I correct in assuming this is a straightforward repair as described in the service manual?

Anyone else have this experience or have thoughts on the cause? The previous owner claims good routine greasing maintenance.

The picture of the break point below makes me think the part was never fully welded as there is half of the cross section rusted. Are these spindles really two pieces welded? I'd assumed they were one solid piece from wheel to splines.

Can't weld it back?...was there a front end loader on it at one time?...that will do that kind of damage

No front loader. The weld would be interior to the stop bracket, so no really.

The DLX is a great little tractor but I have seen a number of those spindles break in that very same place.

That's what I have come to understand, but disappointing nonetheless.

The prevailing theory for the cause seems to be embrittlement of the spindle during manufacture. You'd think a manufacturer would know how to weld a little bracket on a critical part like a spindle without compromising the metal integrity so perhaps the cause is elsewhere but there's no doubt the point of failure was weakened from more than just use.

Either way, I am out the time and coin replacing the part and watching the grass grow knee high in the meantime.

Yup.

Though I found mine in a more catastrophic way, with much more load on it. Thankfully I had the bucket close to the ground when it broke. Mine broke in the EXACT same spot as yours. 1" diameter trailer spindles was my cure.

No way to re-weld it and have it hold. I tigged mine just so I could try to get it back into the shed to fix it for good and it wouldn't even make it 4 feet.

Re: Simplicity Landlord 20 DLX Broken Wheel Spindle

Got it fixed today with new spindle.

Of course some brain surgeon at Simplicity decided to powdercoat the part so that the old bearing wouldn't slide on. Spending time taking off the coating was an unplanned annoyance given I had no wire wheel, sandpaper or other abrasive on hand at the new yard with the tractor. After several hundred turns with a vice grip slowly scraping away without marring the shaft too much I managed to get it all back together.

That was an expensive tractor....you would think that the manufacturer would have a supply ready to ship out with little fanfare to avoid bad publicity...and I am a big Simplicity fan

Agreed.

Thankfully I bought the tractor used for $1200 with 680 hours so my tolerance for failure is a bit higher. It's in good shape otherwise having had new PTO clutch and deck bearings installed recently.

I got a comparative bargain on the spindle part ($150) via an open box item from a dealer listed on -bay. Retail was closer to $200 onilne and who knows locally. Still highway robbery but could be worse, could be green.

Unfortunately many of these tractors are nearing the end of their life cycle as they are nearing 20 years of age. Having had many Simplicity large frame (Sovereign) series tractors I found the DLX to be a disappointment. Many more parts worn at earlier hours and costly to replace. Numerous parts are already NLA though most of those are merely cosmetic. I had a '98 Landlord and it seemed better even though its really built about the same as the DLX models (though a 345 was several thousand more when new) I have seen better longevity and quality in the JD 345 series than these late model Landlords. They just don't wear out parts at the same rate and the power steering system is much better. I had two 345s and sold them because I prefer the Simplicity deck system. Much simpler and less scalping.
