Deutz Allis Ulitma 1920 Mower Deck Question

Hey all. I recently bought a really nice Deutz Allis 1920 with the 2 stage snowblower, plow, 60" deck, rear tiller, 2 vac/blowers with the matching trailer and a fertilizer spreader. The snowblower worked great this winter! Now it's time to swap over to the mower deck. Its a 60" deck with the curtis gear box. I always prefer to change all the fluids that I can on used equipment. I have not found any info yet on changing the oil in this gearbox? How is it done? What oil to use? Really looking forward to running this deck and leaf vac to clean up all the leaves/sticks on the property!

Thanks guys.

Re: Deutz Allis Ulitma 1920 Mower Deck Question

I think that your Deutz is the same as my Simplicity Sunstar. The gearbox on the deck should take 80w90 gear oil. There is a plug on the rear side that can be removed and filled until it runs out. I just refilled my Sunstar before putting on the deck. Just turned it on its end and let the oil drain out. ( I just bought the Sunstar several months ago. These are fantastic tractors. Really built well. Herb

So it's really that easy, huh? Thanks herb. I'll take a look for that plug. Little allen head I assume?

Gearbox oil fill is a square plug. 7/16" I think.

That's interesting. What did you use to remove it?

In your journey with the deck, if you find that the blade belt is too loose, check the outer idler pulley by the discharge for it has two positions! Mine was maxxed out to the tensioner's bump stop but after switching pulley position it tightened it up nicely.

I'll keep a look out for that. Thanks!

I always keep my eyes open to see if I can find one of the 1920's, almost bought one when I purchased my 318, and still wish I'd bought both!

Current Machine JD 322

Former Machines: JD 318, JD 216, JD 212, 1965 JD 110

A note on this. I did do this when replacing the belt. Since then, every time I hit a rock (it happens), I break the splined blade 'adapter' and the blade starts to flop. I've gone through 3 of them this season. I have now put it back to the original notch. My theory is that with it that tight, there is no give and too much shock is transmitted through the system. I'll update at the end of the season after I hit a few more rocks

Does anyone agree with my theory? I have an old simplicity 4211 at my camp and I honestly beat the crap out of that thing and it never skips a beat. I hit stumps, rocks, sticks, brush, birds (that was messy), and it just keeps on cutting. Thinking I should get one of those for the rougher parts of my lawn. Is the 60" deck known to be fragile?

odd for sure

the tensioner sets the tension.

Relocating the pulley only helps get it into the ballpark

all sorts of bad things can happen when hitting stumps, rocks and birds

While it is true that the tensioner sets the tension, stretching the spring further than the original design would apply more tension. In this case, that is true, and there is noticably more tension on the belt in that other position. Whether that has anything to do with me breaking stuff, who knows.
