Easy question about the hydro d-shaft on Sunstar

.
I have the "new to me" GTH20 apart for cleaning and maintenance, and upon greasing the driveshaft u-joint and spline I noticed that the shaft does not appear to be on the spline as far as it could be. Or maybe it is. Per the diagrams it appears there isn't a clip or pin holding it on.

Does this sound right to you?

also, where do you check/add fluid?

#7 is a grease fitting...

rear of the unit for reference

The end with the U-joint is longer than the one in the last pic.

Check the depth from the spider side of the U-joint to the end of the shaft with a wire or shirt pocket machinist's scale.

Re: Easy question about the hydro d-shaft on Sunstar

Tdipaul, I had that U-joint problem. On mine, the engine mounts became loose and the rubber wore out. I had noticed that there was more vibration coming from the shaft, but by the time I did anything about it, the splines on the driveshaft wore too much. Ended up having to replace the driveshaft. For some reason, even after putting new rubber on the engine mounts and replacing the shaft (with a used one), the U-joint still did not go onto the pump shaft far enough. I don't know why and speculated that maybe it never did go on as far as it should. Anyway, I moved the motor mount plate back enough to get the U-joint to slide on almost to the groove in the pump shaft. (Had to drill a couple new holes in the frame.) It made a tight fit between the engine and the cooler housing, but has worked OK since.

The fluid level is checked at the clear tube. One inch of fluid showing in the tube with engine off and parked level.

I checked inside the spider and there is some shaft felt inside so I guess it is ok

Gerald, thanks for this info. I was washing and reassembling the machine outside today (60 and sunny in NJ!) and saw the clear tube you mentioned running atop the hydro unit and the fluid was about where you said it should be.

Took her for a spin and shes all good to go for spring now. These sure are overbuilt tractors and are effortless to operate with the power steering. I wish I had a snow plow for it.
