Well you wouldnít have to worry about hitting a hard one object and bending the crank with that plastic whip/blade. Iím figuring that those blades werenít real effective in the tough stuff, or else they would of caught on.

Pretty cool and rare old mower. And back in the day, I wasn't the biggest fan of Tecumseh 4-strokes, but with a good tune the Tecumseh's would run smoother than the much-simpler Briggs motors,,,

Never what you'll see next on MTF!

Re: eBay/Craigslist Postings

Very nice find. This would no doubt been one of several prototype cordless mowers sent to Brook Stevens OMC's favorite designer. I found similar mowers pictured in Milwaukee Art Museum side under Brooks Stevens works dated 2/26/1980. Note the deck is 18 inch not 19 inch that the later production mowers were. That is the reason for no hight adjusters, the same 18 inch deck as of that era. I hope someone here gets it as it is a real collectable.

Re: eBay/Craigslist Postings

unclelee good to know you still look at what is happening on here. Thought I was seeing things when your name showed up. Mower shown is listed on model number plate as 16, Makes you wonder if there are any other versions still out there. The one I would like to find is one of the 2 blade models shown in Stevens works. Look very much like other early F series mowers except for extra level of housing that covers the belt drive to connect the two blades.

I have been in contact with the seller and received this additional information about the mower and some history. Bill

LAWNBOY PROTOTYPE INFORMATION

Hi,

My dad was an engineer and product developer for Lawn-Boy in Galesburg, then Lawn-Boy HQ moved to Memphis, and then Plymouth WI.
He was also the expert witness for lawsuits for Lawn-Boy.

I would rather not ship this because I am not equipped to do so, and it would likely have to ship via freight on a skid and be rather costly.

Originally my Dad worked here in Milwaukee for Outboard Marine which Lawn-Boy was a division of.
Lawn-Boy product development and testing was also done in Milwaukee. My dad was involved in safety testing.

My dad would be assigned test products to put to practical use and provide feedback.
Test products we had included mowers, outboard motors, snowmobiles and aqualung diving system.

Outboard Marine downsized around 1975 and to keep his job, my dad moved to Galesburg the Lawn-Boy HQ at the time.
I purchased his home and the mower stayed here. I used it back in the day for a city size lot.

It has been stored unused for a long time and I decided to do some cleaning out of my garage.
The batteries were stored inside and are dried up.
The last time I used the mower it worked, but I don't currently have a 36 volt source to test the electric motor.

Regards,

Brian

Re: eBay/Craigslist Postings

That's pretty cool! I wonder how much it weighs? With those 3 batteries and the electric motor it seems to me that it would be a beast, although that motor looks small. I wonder how much HP, or torque it will produce?

Re: eBay/Craigslist Postings

I have one of the 19 inch models That they eventually produced. Looks to have the same electric motor and three 12 volt battery set up. With a full charge of batteries it will run for a little over an hour in normal cutting of grass. Battery pack plugs into mower so you could buy extra battery pack if needed for longer cutting time. A little heavier then 19 inch 2 cycle but not much. Nice mower for small city lawn. Biggest problem was life of batteries and cost of same. Finished product looks nothing like prototype, only the fact it had 36 volt system and same or similar motor. Battery pack and charger were in plastic cases and show up on eBay from time to time.
