My "New" Lawnboy yardsale find

I responded to a local Facebook post offering this lawnmower for $25. I have 4 steel-deck Duraforce models, but I have never owned a aluminum deck Duraforce model. It took some minor repair to get it working, and I'm not sure I like the method of engaging the self-propel. I'm used to raising a bail for self-propel, or on my older ones tilting the handlebar forward. On this you actually have to be moving yourself for the mower to move. This is model 10552. I don't know the years, but I would guess early 2000's. Of course the electric-start battery is bad, and it didn't come with a charger. Not sure but I think one can get an inexpensive after-market battery for these?

Re: My "New" Lawnboy yardsale find

Nice find. I actually like the easy stride system better than the three speed self propelled. It always seems that I want to go different speed then what the gears of the three speed give me. It is to slow or two fast going up or down hills. As for year the serial number has year, the first two numbers indicate the year. 22--- would be 2002, 24---- 2004 and so on. Carburetors tend to surge on the DuraForce engines if not keep in good condition, but have all the power you can use, good rear wheel drive and seem to be fairly easy on gas usage. Adjust handle height for comfortable position and I think you will get to love the Easy Stride system. Also if you are going to keep it, install a 90 degree fuel shut off in the fuel line just below the fuel tank outlet. They should have made fuel shut off in tank at factory, but for some reason they didn't. Not sure why but the Dura Force carburetors seem to leak more often then earlier models even though they use the same needle and seat and similar float. Again, nice find.

Re: My "New" Lawnboy yardsale find

well, I've got 5 Duraforce powered lawnmowers now and I don't have any fuel leaks, nor do I have significant surging. This is my first aluminum deck Duraforce. People make the mistake of getting carb cleaner on the float, which dissolves the coating, and the float fails.

What a steal! Electric start option too!Congrats. Very nice mower. I had the exact same one.
I never could get used to the easy stride. It drove me crazy. Iíve had 3 or 4 and always end up flipping them while keeping the 3 speed ones as I find them so much better to operate. I know thereís lots of guys out there that like the easy stride though so itís all about personal preference.

Re: My "New" Lawnboy yardsale find

Dang, that's a deal for $25! My neighbor has this exact same model minus the electric start and seems to like it very much. I've no idea re: the battery but I'd be tempted to try and wire up a cheaper aftermarket one. I'm thinking that an OEM LB battery (if you can even find one) would be $$$.

They are. Last I checked they're around $70.

If you have a Batteries Plus near you, check with them on a battery. I picked up a nice Duracell AGM battery for my Liberty mower and it was cheap and has performed well. The Liberty is not self charging but the battery seems to last a very long time between charges. If you need a charger for the mower send my a PM as I have a NOS Lawnboy charger and if you send me a email address I can send you a picture to see if it is something you are interested in. Bill

Re: My "New" Lawnboy yardsale find

Well I decided what have I got to lose, and I charged up the battery on my car battery charger at the lowest amperage of 2 amps. It took a charge, and by golly it will start the mower. I am amazed at my $25 purchase.
