Junk Windfall

I went to look at a Craftsman (Rider) parts mower yesterday. When I bought the rider the guy ask me if I needed any push mowers. He took me over to look at 9 push mowers. I saw 2 with Quantum engines and ask him what he wanted for those 2. He said I could have them if I would take them all.
The two not on the trailer are going straight to my brothers scrap pile.
The guy said he used the Craftsman With flashing over the rust hole last year to mow his dog lot, but didn't know anything about the rest of them. I hope it amuses y'all that anyone would haul all this home, my wife doesn't see any humor in it.

Nice Haul! I would save that Weedeater deck, and put the Quantum off of the rusted Craftsman on there. Should bolt right up.

The Weedeater frame has one torn up mounting hole but it could probably be fixed. The 22 inch Craftsman in the second post, second picture has a solid frame. It may get one of the good engines. When I pulled the flashing off that Craftsman I couldn't believe anybody was brave/foolish enough to mow with it.

Lawnboy 77; Don't give me to much credit yet, it doesn't take much energy to haul them home.

How much abuse can one man give to his mowers? It would take me a lifetime to get through half that number.

This guys place looked like "Sanford & Son", I doubt he bought any of these mowers new.
I decided not to fix the Weedeater frame, I hauled it and the Toro to my brothers scrap pile yesterday.

There is an old lady who has a detached garden just over the road from us. She doesn't have a lawn mower. It is a rock breaker, or that's what it sounds like. She just doesn't take any care whatsoever.

I'll ask her to let you know when she's finished with it.

Re: Junk Windfall

Yesterday I got the two 20 inch Murrays on the tailgate of the truck to check them out. The one with the complete engine didn't have a blade so I took the one off the other and set it on the ground to try it. I checked the oil, removed the very nasty air filter, poured the old gas and water out of the tank, sprayed some carb cleaner in it and pulled the rope. Then I pulled the rope some more and never got a pop. I got my inline spark tester and it showed spark so I took the plug out to see if it had water in the cylinder. When I removed the plug I saw that it was gummed up so it couldn't fire. I cleaned the plug, installed it and pulled a while longer using carb cleaner. At that point I was sick of it and went in the house for the night. This morning I remembered that a few times in the past the inline spark tester had made me think the plug was firing when it wasn't. I put a new plug in it and it fired right up. I put some fresh gas in the tank but it still wouldn't start without some starting fluid. I nursed it along with the fluid for a minute or so til it picked up the gas. I let it run about 15 minutes then mowed a small section of grass with it. I cleaned and installed the air filter and topped it of with gas. I cranked it several more time to be sure it would run without starting fluid then loaded it up, took it to the local hardware and gave it away. Most people would have tried a new plug to start with but I like to do stuff the hard way.

Re: Junk Windfall

I was in the hardware store after I got the mowers and he said if I got any of them running he could sell them for me. He said a lady had called him earlier this week asking him about a used one because she couldn't afford a new one. I told him just to give it to her.

Re: Junk Windfall

While I was at it I got the rusted out Honda on the tailgate and pulled the motor off it. The blade bolts were the tightest I ever saw on a walk behind mower. One of them striped the shoulders off and I ended up grinding it off. I haven't tried to get the blade adapter off yet, bet that will be fun. I guess the rest will be scraped.

Re: Junk Windfall

It amazes me stores sell ANY new push mowers now--they are getting almost $200 for a no frills, push mower with no self propulsion or electric start, etc, like you used to get for that price..same mowers most stores used to sell for $59.95 on sale, only now they are made of more plastic and die cast junk instead of steel..

I currently have at least 5 push mowers in my shed--I rarely ever use even ONE of them, people keep giving them to me,and I get them to run decent, some I sold, some I just gave to friends in need, and I still have nearly a half dozen left to trip over!..
Ones I see being sold at yard sales or flea markets usually go for under $20,and still look new,I guess people throw them in the dump the first time they fail to start?..
