Lawn Boy 2010 Gardener

Hello everyone! I've been an avid Lawn Boy enthusiast for about 10 years now, and just stumbled upon something I didn't know was made. Picked up this 2010 and accompanying Hobby Gardener yesterday. Excited to get the 2010 working, and I'm looking for a replacement engine for the Hobby Gardener.

Any info, documentation, or leads on parts for these guys would be greatly appreciated. I'll post back with some more pics today as I work on the 2010!

She runs! Tank was full of crap, but luckily the fuel shutoff was closed and the carb was run dry. Cleaned up needle and seat and main jet, cleaned fuel tank, shutoff valve, and installed a filter. Cleaned and adjusted the points, fixed a stripped hole for the shroud, and gave her some 16:1. Fired up, though a little hard to start. Filled up the case with gear oil and ran it for a solid 5+ hours today! It did so well! Did some heavy tilling in the garden, then put on the cultivator discs and levels some ground behind the house. I remember why I love these Lawn Boy engines and designs.

Also spent a lot of time dialing in the mixture on the carb. Got it real happy under load and no excess smoke.

Issues:

Weak magneto when unit is hot. Almost impossible to restart. Best source for C engine parts?

Engine gets excess fuel when it is at an angle on going over bumps. Float looked adjusted properly, will invest in new needle/seat/float just to be sure.

Small leak from top of gearcase through the clutch rod.

Re: Lawn Boy 2010 Gardener

Awesome! Love to see and hear about these classics brought back to life. That hard to start after hot maybe a low compression issue. From my experience when old magneto coils like that fail when hot they are a no-go until it cools down again. I learned that the hard way by pushing an old Honda dirt bike up a steep river hill a few times after it got hot, died and wouldn't restart. Those old Honda Elsinore MT250s are not light machines either.

Re: Lawn Boy 2010 Gardener

I always liked that Gardner tiller. Under load it will smoke a little out of the exhaust openings on each side of the cast iron housing that also acts like a muffler.Reminds me of a snorting bull. Send me a PM with email address and I will send you copy of service manual pages on the two. I don't think you can send attachments to PM's. At least I don't know how.

Congrats and good luck on your tiller find.
Where are you in Ohio that you could till? it's been raining so much that my yard is a swamp.

Southeastern Ohio, by Athens. It has rained quite a bit but the last few forecasts for all day rain ended up being short bursts. It wasn't dry, but enough to till.

This is the best match that I have seen for the early 60s Lawnboy gold paint. Your local PPG store should be able put that in a spray can for you, or a quart can of acrylic enamel.

Here is a link to the thread that I got that color code from. It's unclelee's 1960 ET-1 edger restore. The color is near perfect!

Thanks! What a beautiful color.

How do you all get the gas caps to stop leaking?

My D engine mower has the same style gas cap and I have to run with 1/2 tank or less or when it splashes it saturates the fiber discs under the cap and then comes right out the top hole. The tiller is the same. With a full tank it sloshes fuel out the cap.
