Picked-up my new best friend today--5518

First off, let me just say that I love this forum. There is a ton of great info here and everyone is very friendly. Thank-you to all.

For several years now, I've been wanting to get some kind of snow blower to replace my '53 Farmall Cub. I am land-locked and run out of places to put the snow so it starts taking up my (limited) area to park. Oh, and I live on a private road (which just means WE maintain it) and I need to be able to get out at any time for work.

I researched a ton of different blowers. My Pops has a tracked Honda walk behind and it's very nice but I don't really want to walk my street about four times every time it snows. The brand new loaded-out John Deere 4520 was something (pressurized cab and loader) but at $49K, I must pass even though I have always had a dream to have one of these. I looked into what it would take to fab a snow blower on my Cub and thought it would be tough with time and will still cost me some $$.

This year has been tough for us snow-wise and my neighbors have helped me a couple times with their Cub Cadets with blowers. They work pretty well. I looked at them as well as the JD 400 but they are all single stage snow blowers and I wanted a two stage...

I have a buddy with a 3813 and two-stage blower that he has had for years. He absolutely loves this machine. I put a lot into what he says so I started looking at what Honda models were made. I found the 5518 and it was love at first sight.

Here's my '53 Cub (that I think is really cool even though I feel like I'm betraying her with the 5518):

And here are some pics of the 5518 I picked-up today:

I found a very nice blower and parts I need and will have that next week. After I unloaded her, a buddy and I proceeded to go on the lake and clear a large area down to the ice. I am simply amazed at what this 5518 can do. It can get stuck but I had to push the limits to do that. If she stops going forward, she just backs-out when I hit the differential lock. Here's the ice-rink (notice the donuts he and I were doing ):

And his baby:

The 5518 I picked-up today is pretty nice. Not quite as Mint as I was thinking based on the pics but still, pretty nice. I'm really looking forward to getting the blower.

Re: Picked-up my new best friend today--5518

This was a nice tractor, but not a great seller. Too spendy for the market, so it was discontinued by Honda.

I only found two service notes:

1. Max engine rpm is 2,950. This is slower than many other Honda tractors, but the travel speed is the same because of the H5518's gearing...

2. A Service Bulletin was issued back in March, 1996 for a "no shift" issue with the main transmission. Affected tractors were serial numbers 2000001-2500021. The shift piece shaft could damage the neutral switch, causing the interlock system to prohibit shifting. Updated shift piece shafts got improved surface treatments to prevent this problem. Fix is to replace the shift piece shaft and damaged neutral switch:

I appreciate your post and info. My Frame Number is TZAC-3500567 and the Engine Number is 1015981 so it looks to me like I'm not in the Service Bulletin.

Spendy it was... The price for the tractor, mower deck (which I did not get) and the 54" blade was $9,177.00 on 3/12/96 (I got a fairly complete file on the unit). The customer that purchased the unit originally was a Honda employee and there was a considerable discount given to them but at $7,573.20 for the tractor, mower deck, 54" blade and quick-hitch it was still expensive. But I purchased a diesel grasshopper new in 2000 for $10K and that just came with a mower. Good equipment is not cheap.

Ya that looks like a good buy. I use 3813 for blowing snow it does the trick, but the 4 wheel drive would be awesome!

Very nice! that probably the nicest looking 5518 I've ever seen. I've been lookin for me one for years, they just don't ever show up around my Area.

Like other things, it looks better in the pics than it does up really close. I was a bit surprised that the PO didn't even wipe the dust off of her before I got there to pick it up. Could really just use a bath. Oh, and a complete service.

That said, it's definitely not been abused.

I still don't have the heart to leave my Cub outside. With no real room, the 5518 is outside until I can transport the Cub to the shop.

Did I already say that I can't wait to get the snow blower? Should be in my area late tomorrow.

Do you mind me asking approximately what you paid for the 5518? I have one on my list to buy eventually, but haven't seen one for sale in years in this area.
Thanks.

It was on CL for $4K with only the 54" blade and the quick hitch (no mower deck which was fine for me but would have a value if it was included). I offered $3200 and he countered at $3400. I offered 25% less and we settled at 15% less than listed price.

I don't think I stole it but likewise, I don't think he bent me over either. There was one on CL at $5500 that had 233 hours, front blade, snow blower, mold board plow, mower deck, looked like two sets of wheel weights, etc... for $5500 (http://boone.craigslist.org/grd/4257078760.html). Only problem was that it looked like it had never been stored inside and was a nice faded pink... Oh, and it was in North Carolina I believe. When I called them, it was sold to a Canadian. That was not a bad deal for everything you got.

Here's a nice one in Pittsburgh: https://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/grd/4319831624.html. Just listed a day ago and looks very nice (I haven't studied the listing but from what I see it looks about as nice as you could find). Incidentally, I drove four hours to get mine and would not have had a problem with more distance but I drive a lot.

I am happy with mine. It is in pretty darn good condition (for being 18 years old). I will have $1700 in the snow blower but it's said to be mint. Breakdown on that is $1K for the blower then another $700 for the chute crank, crank support and drive shaft (all of which I need). Two guys in MN/WI that are friends with each other and live fairly close to each other are selling me the four pieces and worked together on getting everything at one place for pickup which should happen tomorrow morning (I gave one of them $50 for driving the three parts to his buddy's house which is included in the $700 for his three parts). Hopefully, I will be able to pickup the pieces on Saturday. A friend is having his crew make the pickup on their way back from Hibbing MN to Fort Wayne, IN which is generally where I live.

From what I have seen, there does not really seem to be another machine like this one--4wd, 4 wheel steer, two stage snow blower which is what mine will be doing 95% of the time. I like the JD 400 but it's single stage snow blower and 2wd. I will have $5100 in mine and I haven't seen another machine like this one for that price. Oh, and it's a Honda--our largest customer (Anna Engine Plant). Everyone knows they make an awesome product which outweighed the parts availability IMHO.

Don't know if you would consider an RT5000 but there are two in your area for price of one + attachments. The tiller is rare as in the bucket so with the sale of both you could be possibly have a very nice Honda rt5000 + a parts tractor if the unit is in the condition as posted.

Note: I think there is someone on this forum looking for a tiller and many that I am sure would like the bucket.

Great post right there!

I would love to have the rear lifting cylinder and three point hitch (dealer installed "kit" on 5518's so they seem to be a bit scarce) as well as a tiller but I don't think I could get those parts for less than $2500 to $3000. So, for $400 more, you get two tractors and a loader. AND the way he words it, the price seems negotiable.

Man, I just wish money wasn't a concern...

FYI: John Deere also offers All-Wheel-Drive with All-Wheel-Steer, with choice of gasoline or diesel engine, in their X729, X749, and X739 models. Several 2-stage snowblowers are available as well (47" and 54"). Here's a good demo:
