Loud rattle

Well mowing with the little Honda today just as I am finishing a very loud vibration/rattle when the deck was engaged. Parked it on the drive. Tried it again, noise than smooth again. Curious looking under the deck, checking PTO clutch and so on and I see ball bearing balls laying on the ground under the front of the machine. Thinking the worst of the PTO but then caught a glimpse of one of the tensioner pulleys and it was loose and crooked. Found a new one on Amazon, order placed $45 free shipping.
Maybe I should buy 2? I don't know................................What are the odds the other will fail in rapid succession?

Re: Loud rattle

take the belt off and give the idler a spin. that should give you an idea of if it's on it's way out or not.

The old one was original. I am going to see if I can modify it with a new bearing and if so I will post process with photos as I did when I rebuilt the PTO clutch
The guy I had bought the machine from was the 2nd owner. He had it for a little over 10 years buying from the original owner when he bought the house from him. Original owner had it from new later mid 90's IIRC so unit is gotta be 25 yo give or take

I would not buy a spare unless it helps you sleep at night. Rebuilding the old one...may not be worth the trouble... unless you like to tinker.

Re: Loud rattle

not hard at to drill out rivets....replace bearing....bolt them back together. Did all mine years ago and previous owner had box of old parts....so i did the few in that also....bearings at an industrial supply aren't expensive....and quick job now that all wheels are converted ...and much easier than the pto conversion.

I gutted my deck yesterday to send to a welder...it was pretty rough shape. While i have everything off we'll christen my buddies new bench press to do spindle bearings....been 3 or four seasons....and they can be pretty stubborn. First time I did them...took them to a shop to get pressed off.....one was showing 30 tons on his guage.....those spindles are pricey also.

Re: Loud rattle

Well I did manage to get the pulley apart and will head over to Motion Industries today for another bearing (unless you have a bearing number) wasn't terribly hard. If I ever have to do the spindles (my deck is only about 3 years old) I think I will convert it to semi-sealed bearings and install zerks on the spindle housings. Time will tell on that.

Re: Loud rattle

Well I ran over to motion industries and picked up a bearing (Koyo 6201RSC3GXM) plus some 1/4-20 K-Lock nuts, and 1/4-20 x 3/8" Socket Head Cap Screws. Put it all together and good as new. So I guess I will keep the new one as a spare LOL. Oh and using the belt and suspenders theory I also put some Loctite Blue on each screw

Re: Loud rattle

The most serious mechanical breakdown I had on my H3011H RER was an idler pulley bearing. Never did try to source a replacement. All bearings are standard. I drilled out the rivets, but in a new bearing from the local machinery supply store and bolted it back together with allen bolts and nuts. Good as new.

Re: Loud rattle

Turns out I hastened it's demise. I had the belt WAY WAY too tight. I did look in the shop manual and it mentions a tension indicator but I could not make hide or hair of where it is or how it works as my tensioner does not look like the one in the shop manual. Does anyone have a photo of one on the 42" deck? I guessed at it tightening it only enough to put some "tension" on the spring on the right side idler pulley. Have been mowing and it works fine
