Speed of the site

Before I post this to the general population at large, I thought I'd ask among the Site Sponsors. Should be a group of regulars, many of whom have been here for a long time. All who should have minimal advertising present in the data stream. And, heck, there hasn't even been a post here in the Site Sponsor forum for over 3 months, so maybe some of us are just waiting for something to react to.

My experience suggests the page load time has increased noticeably in the past few months. I have very good download speed from my ISP. I have effective antivirus and malware monitoring. I manage my cookies, and clear my cache. And, for what it's worth, I am not experiencing the same level of slow-down on the four other forums I participate in regularly, nor any of the social media sites I visit.

I'm not trying to start a negative fest, nor am I adverse to any advice I might not have already tried. And, I probably don't need to be in on any secrets the Mods and the MTF Support folks are keeping under their hats. I'm just curious, what has happened. I don't see the statistics, but based on the level of participation in the threads I am active in (JD GT/LT forum, ATV, Chainsaw, Tools, and a couple others) I have the sense the site is less busy now than perhaps a couple years ago. I could be wrong, but posted questions seem to take longer for answers and reaction than I remember. Then again, I remember lots of things that were better in my youth. Maybe my memory is just applying a healthy patina on the past.

So, anyway, a direct question:

Are others among Site Sponsors experiencing slower page load times than we used to see?

Thanks, Carry on, Tractor safely!

No secrets here between the volunteer staff and the members. You know what we know as it is posted in the support area as problems and issues are raised. Activity is down and been down for sometime over previous years. But actually, recently I've noticed it coming back up slowly. We are still getting requests from members coming back after the password mess. Also members that either have not been on for a year or more or have changed emails and now cannot get back in due to no longer being able to access the old email, we get several messages daily from those via the contact page we are helping to get back online with us. Coming into Spring now always helps too.

Re: Speed of the site

Hey Jere,

I do have a theory about the speed/page loading thing, but its only a theory and I haven't been able to prove or disprove it based on anyone else's experience... My Adobe Flash plugin for my Firefox went outdated some months ago, and I haven't bothered updating Flash in FireFox. Since then, I've noticed as I cruise the site, I'm seeing a number of reminders to update my Flash but I'm also seeing really acceptable load times and fewer background redirects for ads and stuff. So I've been wondering if its the flash-based banners and ads that slow people down so much (both because Flash is a huge resource hog and because those ads have gotta load their content from somewhere). In fact, my browsing experience in general has been much more pleasant since my Flash plugin was set to default disabled. And if I really want to watch something that requires Flash in FireFox, I can temporarily enable it.

Again, this is just my experience, but I'd be interested to see if anyone else finds improvements after disabling the Flash plugin.

Re: Speed of the site

Thanks LTG. I use Chrome, and Google has built Flash into this browser. It can be configured to operate/enable Flash on "All, None, or Important" sites. The Important sites are managed as a white list, and I don't have MTF listed on my white list, which I interpret to mean I am not using it here. However, it's worth a shot at totally disabling it to be more confident.

And, for what it's worth, the site is running much faster this morning than it was all day yesterday. Not sure what if anything that might mean.

Re: Speed of the site

I have noticed it takes longer for a thread to "load" too,but I assumed it was probably my aging computer, that still has XP and I use Google Chrome for a browser, which "is no longer supported for XP",so its not the latest version..

When I click on to view a thread,I watch the icon at the top of the page, the "window",and I see a spinning arrow, for several seconds--then the arrows reverses rotation, and the thread opens...this does not happen on other forums or websites I frequent, some of which are VerticalScope ones also...just MTF...

I think I disabled "flash" but I'm unaware if Chrome has it "built in" or not..

I am on the "new" view, not the "classic" view, maybe that would make it faster?--never bothered to try that...it is a bit irritating having to wait several seconds for a thread to open, but I just live with it..

Re: Speed of the site

The forum seems to favor certain browsers. I have been running in Classic View on IE 11 since Full View was added. It is slower than it's ever been. But if I switch to the Edge browser it is much faster in any view.

Re: Speed of the site

Jere all I can contribute is much the same that has already been mentioned. My load times vary across different devices.

Phone - Safari, classic view is OK on load times 90% of the time
Personal computer - Chrome, Windows 7, varies from painfully dial-up slow to just slow.
Work computer - Chrome, whatever the latest version of Windows is, varies from lightening fast to slow... tested four windows during the course of writing this... home page load times of - 3 seconds, less than human reaction time, 1.5 seconds, and 5 seconds.... I don't know if that qualifies as slow... but 5 seconds with my internet connection and computer means its slow. (820 Mbps download and 756 Mbps upload, as tested immediately following my tests above)

The true test of skill is when you can put something back together and it works... not the dusty half disassembled pile of junk in the corner....

Re: Speed of the site

Thanks for all the comments. I believe it is running smoother, and slightly faster this week. Pretty subjective thing to report, but perception is all 99% of us have to measure response time. So, I did nothing different here, and it is improved, I think. In any event, I quit using safari on my iPhone once they re-opened the MTF Ap which I like a lot. I especially like the "Participated" view. As I said, thanks for the comments. I guess we can all go back to ignoring the Club MTF forum again, and I won't be the one to present this speed issue in the open forum.

I’m new here, so my two cents is worth just about... 2 cents....
You might want to give some thought about having a thread JUST for advertisers ONLY, and advertisers can ONLY post there. If anyone is looking to buy, they can go to that thread, and keep the others open for discussion... just a thought

Re: Speed of the site

The site sponsors (vendors) do have their own section. Rarely will you see them posting in the general info forums. They haven't been very active lately.

As for loading speeds, that has been an issue over many VS and other forums the last couple of years. It comes and goes, but I think it's pretty good these days.

Re: Speed of the site

well one reason I have not been here until the last few months is because I stopped getting E-mails on the threads I'm watching last fall. I got busy and didn't think about it. then i was looking at buying another tractor and it dawned on me that I was not getting emails. I contacted a MOG and it was fixed in a week.

Now that I get the emails I remember to log in and read the threads.

I'm not sure if the email problem is common for other but it has happened to me 3 times since I've been a member here 10 years ago. Wow has it been that long!

Been driving Deeres since 1974, Dodges since 1984, and Davidsons since 2004. Love my wife and kids I'm a blessed man.
