Re: What did you do to or on your Craftsman today?

I found the bottom of the rabbit hole with RED. Had some help cleaning up the good side and replaced the gasket there. Decided on a test fire to check the used coil pack.

I will be rebuilding this engine over the winter, already pricing gaskets, rings, and a new coil pack. I just need him to get through mowing seasion.

It is in nice shape on the outside.
Starter and other things look pretty rusty. Think it might be able to go again?

Re: What did you do to or on your Craftsman today?

I took the tractor out this evening to pull the aerator again, because my yard has so many spots where water just puddles. Went well, but the tranny started getting hotter as time went on. And I noticed oil on the hitch point, and on the tranny case. So, will have to do some investigating. Hoping it is something simple, and nothing requiring me to open the case up, because I need to mow this week.

forget doing that.. the Kohler Courage engine is a no good one.. it takes courage to own a Courage.. they seam to self destruct.. with the damage ur's has seen.. it would B foolish to do repairs to it.. the cooling fins r almost gone.. they r needed to cool the engine..

I would go to Craig's list & find a new or used engine.. that is in the farm & garden section of Craig's list.. the Kohler Commands or the 'V' twins Pro series r good engines.. the have HYD lifters in them.. no valves to adjust.. u have to run 10W-30 oil in them..

I shouldn't need it for a week or two. I am going to try and repair the coil with the cut wire, and put the known good coil up. The spark tester led me down the wrong path.

Re: What did you do to or on your Craftsman today?

Probably won't be doing tires. At least not this year. I can air up and mow, so I can get by another season. Might try the starch thing though, if I can figure out how.

Look at the electrical connector on both. Do they match? Both gravity-fed fuel systems (or both have fuel pumps)? Throttle/choke cable the same or very close in length and location?

If yes to all of the above, then you should have an easy bolt-in, plug-n-play swap.

I bought a Husqvarna GT (same as Craftsman), which had been repowered from a Kohler to a Briggs by the PO. It's definitely doable. You may need to add a starter solenoid, and change other wiring connections.

I'd start a dedicated thread for this project.
