Nothing happens when I turn ignition key LTX1000

Hi,

I just bought a used Craftsmen LTX1000 (Model # 917.272450) last summer. I replaced the battery, plugs, fuel filter and air filter. It was starting and running great until last weekend. Actually it started up easily a couple of different times that weekend - I had to mow the grass at the lake on 2 separate days because I got rained out before I could finish. Anyway, the second day like I said it started right up and I was almost done when I noticed that the deck on the left side, as I'm sitting on it, looked lower than the other side.

I turned the mower off and looked under the deck - this is the side that has the turn knob that adjusts the height of the deck. I lifted up on the deck and saw that it did raise a little bit more and it looked more level with the other side. There was a nut underneath, so I adjusted that so that now my deck was a bit higher on that side. I also reached in above the deck and scooped out several handfuls of lawn debris.

When I went to start the tractor again nothing happened when I turned the key. It didn't turn over and acted completely dead. Although I had a new battery, I undid the wires and took a wire brush and sandpaper to make sure there was a good connection - still absolutely nothing.

So, what could be the issue? I did accidentally knock a wire loose when I cleaned out debris? Or is there some sort of safety switch that I disengaged or that happened to just stop working? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Ken

Step 1, short your solenoid control line and see if it clicks.
If it clicks you are good, if not: either you need a new one or your battery is too low.
.

That is the most common issue. Rule it out before waste time looking in other places.

I know itís a dumb question but u never know... is the deck dis-engaged? If the batt is new, a safety switch is not set or the solenoid isnít working. If it was the solenoid I should hear a clicking when key is turned

Can you please tell me step by step how to do this? I'm pretty handy but I am not familiar with this procedure. Thanks.

Yes the deck was dis-engaged and in the raised position. I did wonder if that safety switch under the lever to engage/dis-engage the blades could be the issue. As stated above, I don't know how to check if the solenoid is working.

If not clicking, then a safety switch, one for the seat, brake/clutch, neutral on the trans, and the deck. Does it have a manual handle or electric pto for the deck?

Take a length of wire (or if you have room you can use a jumper cable) and go from the positive on your battery to the small pole on your solenoid.

You are briefly connecting these, it is a 12V activation signal line. This will activate it even if the engine is off (and it should be for this test) or any safety switches are tripped.

Manual handle to engage the deck.

One other thing that I remembered, it did seem like the brake/clutch pedal was not going nearly as far when I pushed on it with my foot.

Would I be able to easily find these safety switches (I do know about the one for the seat)? How would I know if a particular safety switch was the issue?

This might point to your issue as there is a clutch/brake switch to keep you from running over people if it is in gear.

However, you likely just pulled out a loose connection.

Go from simple to complicated.

I am thinking it is something simple, I'm just unfamiliar with troubleshooting & handyman work on small engines/tractors. And wiring is my worst subject. I suppose I just need to look and follow wires to see if anything got disconnected.

Safety switches is a good guess....but first check the 20 amp fuse near the solinoid...if that is blown no power goes anywhere.....

I'm not exactly sure where the solenoid is located, nor that fuse. Could you provide me a little direction please.

Follow your positive battery cable, the first thing you come to will be a three terminal device (two large lugs, one small), that is your solenoid.

The fuse will be on a smaller wire off the positive and has a clearish case that pops open. Inline fuse, going to the ignition.
