Sears Craftsman Tractor Generator Attachment

Good afternoon. I've joined this group in the hopes of linking up an old piece of tractor hardware with somebody who needs it for a restoration.
I'm an "old car restorer" from way back and understand how tough it can be to find some parts.
Here's the story: (there's always a story, isn't there?)
Back in the late 1970's (1977 I think) I bought a new Garden Tractor from the local Sears store. It was made by Roper as I recall. The engine was a Tecumseh OH140 and it was primarily used for mowing the grass. Great machine.
In addition to the tractor, I bought a generator attachment. It mounted in front of the grille and was powered by a v-belt off the engine. It sat on a shelf for literally decades and was only used once as a test to make sure it worked. It is a 4000 watt unit.
The tractor is long gone, but the generator is still in my garage in new condition. I no longer have the mounting plate for it, but it was simply a few pieces of bend sheet metal. I do have the original Sears manuals for both the generator and the mounting.
Would very much like to find somebody who would like this generator and could pick it up in New Hampshire.
I've attached a pix of this generator. Hope this works and I can find it a new home. [email protected]

I use an electric chainsaw (120V, 15A) & have an LT1000 in N. Andover. Curious.

Re: Sears Craftsman Tractor Generator Attachment

Here is some more information on this generator (actually, its an alternator). I've scanned a couple of pages from the manuals that I have for it. The generator has a horizontal shaft that mounts the drive pulley, so a horizontal shaft motor/drive is required. Motor should be 10hp or more. On the old Sears garden tractor that I had, the v-belt mounted the engine pulley where the mower belt would normally be. The mower belt was simply left slack off the pulley.
This generator will operate fine with rotation in either direction and is very heavy... I'm guessing its at least 50 lbs.
Yes, its in new condition after 45 years of storage.
No, I'm not giving it away.
Ideally, I'd love to find somebody that has a restored mid to late 70's Sears tractor who wants the ultimate show addition. These were pretty rare even "back in the day" due to their cost. You may never see another.
Or, maybe you're just really hankering to have this in your garage for a while...

Re: Sears Craftsman Tractor Generator Attachment

I've seen a bunch of those, maybe just because they find their way into the hands of members here. None were in anywhere near as good condition, of course.

Re: Sears Craftsman Tractor Generator Attachment

Thanks Mike. I've seen a couple 2500 watt units, but this is the only 4000 I've seen. No matter, it is what it is. Hoping somebody can use it.

Re: Sears Craftsman Tractor Generator Attachment

Good point, I don't think I'd have noticed that. Wish I had a Suburban to put it onto.

Re: Sears Craftsman Tractor Generator Attachment

Where in NH are you? I am in Ashburnham Ma, on the Ringe NH border. I would like to have that unit, that is, if the price its right or if you want to trade...

I have 19 Sears Tractors right now, and one in particular that would look good on is my 1978 GT18 (Silver and black) that I got from my dad when I bought my house in 2009. It was the tractor I grew up using.

Re: Sears Craftsman Tractor Generator Attachment

Good afternoon. According to on-line mapping/directions, you're less than 2 hours from me. I'm pretty close to Mount Sunapee, NH.
Drop me a note at [email protected] and we can work something out.

Generator remains available. As noted earlier, I'm not giving it away, but $250 dollars will own it.

Here's a partial pic of one of mine. It's a 4K one too. Seems like a fair price especially regarding the condition.

Re: Sears Craftsman Tractor Generator Attachment

Surely you could be persuaded to ship the unit? You can take it to any UPS store and they will pack it and guarantee it will arrive safe with extra insurance. I might be interested if you will ship it.
