Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

I had the time today to do some dirt work. I had a compost pile that really needed to be spread out and I had a couple spots in my pasture that had low spots and a couple holes on the south side of my property well that is done for now.

Earlier I have been house sitting my next door neighbors place while they are out of state for the next few weeks and I am mowing his yard and this very brave doe and fawn are watching me while I mow.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

I went to several antique stores today and I was not looking for anything in particular and found a couple cheap items at 50 cents a piece. Of course it reminded me of my father who was a Manager at Kinney shoes for a couple years before he was hired on at Sears in the mid 1960's.

Some of the weirdest things will immediately spark memories of dad and these did it for me. A couple shoe horns.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

My father worked at Kinney shoes for a couple years after he retired from the Air Force in the early 1960's. Kinney shoes wanted to transfer him to Omaha and my father refused the transfer and quit. He went down to the Sears store and he was hired on the spot. He worked at Sears for the next 20 plus years until he retired. I always remember the shoe horns all over my parents house as they used to give those out free and we used them for short simple pry tools and actual shoe horns. I have not seen a shoe horn for the last ten to twenty years and seeing them yesterday sure sparked memories of them at my parents home.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

I have got 120 hours on my John Deere X590 and I smoked the upper drive belt (PTO to deck) for the mower deck over the weekend. I got a stick in the area of the drive belt and that is all it took. Well today I pulled the deck and I have to say that was a bugger to figure out on how it was removed. Once I figured it out actually was not hard but man I took some time and getting creative on sliding the pulled deck out from the tractor. I finally figured that out and saw the spindle drive belt was fine and has lots of life left in it.

Once I saw what was needed I headed down to the Deere dealer and I was noticing that also the blades were to the point that they needed replacement anyway. I get to the dealer and get three new blades, 2 new PTO to deck belts and a replacement belt for the deck itself. I always want to have to replacement belts for the deck as I hate to be stopped in my tracks mowing and lose a belt with the dealership closed. I just toss the spares in garage on the hooks I have for that purpose.

I lost no time over the weekend on the mowing chore as I have my John Deere 2305 with the 62" deck and I got the place mowed anyway. It is just the fact I have to do more trimming with the string trimmer around the house as I can't go everywhere the X590 can go. In the wide open areas the 2305 does the same job so really no difference I was able to get the job finish and today get the X590 back on the go.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

Well in post 603 of this thread I told about Jordan the Springer we got from www.springerrescue.org and today we officially adopted this springer and he is our newest permanent member of our family. This springer has wormed his way into our hearts and we love him dearly. Just his zest for life and the similar mannerisms from our previous springers we cannot resist it and after discussing with my wife whether keeping him or returning him it was decided by both of us to keep this wonderful dog.

Jordan has absolutely no hunting instincts but a strong instinct for running, loving his family and having fun but that is not the reason we got him as he was intended to be a companion dog and family member. He is intent on keeping my wife and I happy and laughing at his goofball antics. This dog is a high energy dog that needs a hour or so of running twice a day to be docile in the house and he lets you know when he wants out he also is getting twice daily walks up to a mile along with Bo and Cooper and he is loving the new life we offer him.

Since this dog fits into our life style and he accepts us unconditionally we adopted him and he is our dog. With all the mannerisms that he has that are very similar to other springers we had before he is our dog. He is crate trained, house broke and is just a joy to have around we have a new permanent member to our family.

Beautiful dog,and sounds like a real character.

Is that a vacuum hose in the last pic ? It's been ~50 years since I have seen a dog that liked being vacuumed.

When I was a kid our first dog (Millie, a lab/terrier cross) would follow my mother around the house while she was vacuuming, nudging her to say "my turn, my turn"... then when it was time for her vacuuming she would lift her front legs and then roll over on her back to make sure Mom didn't miss a spot.

2001 GT235 with 48C deck and #15 cart
A couple of LawnBoy 2-strokes but the model # stickers fell off (hold on, I found one... CS20ZSR)
A great old Craftsman 3.5/20 push mower that does a lot of the hard work
Few things are more fun than IPSC/IDPA shoots but a Stihl FS-560 comes pretty close

Yes that is a vacuum hose for my wife's small shop vacuum. This boy just loves the vacuum and after I brush him he runs to my wife to vacuumed. I think that he loves the way it removes any loose fur and it is apparent he likes it a lot. I just think about our prior springers both love having the vacuum as they also did the same thing when I finished brushing them. Our beagle Cooper loves to be brushed but hates the vacuum and since that is the case we don't attempt to vacuum him. Our Llasha Bo also loves to be vacuum but in all cases if a dog does not like to be vacuumed it does not get it.

I have always said that Springers just are the biggest lovers and will tolerate anything to get the loving and attention that make them a great dog. This is our third springer and we just love the zest of life that this breed has. After the failed adoption of a Tennessee Treeing Coonhound and having to return him to the rescue group because of his aggressive fear of women. I decided that we would go back to springers and it is the best move I could of made for my wife and myself. We are familiar with the breed and know what makes them tick. I see the spirit in Jordan of both Ricky and Rocky our deceased springers Ricky was our black and white and he made it to 14 years old and Rocky made it to 16-17 years old we dearly miss those two but realize that pets don't stay a long time but their spirits and memories last a lifetime.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

I knew better but I still did it. I went to replace the water pump on 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins engine as I noticed that it had a leak. I decided to go cheap and went to auto parts store and get a new one with a lifetime warranty. Well I spent 4 hours fussing with the auto parts water pump pulled it back out and measure the lower bolt hole. The dang thing was .05 to long and made contact with the engine block flange. Back to the auto parts store got a refund and then went to the Dodge dealer and bought a new from them. First stab and it bolt right up. The Cummins part was USA made and the other was from overseas.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

Just a lesson on getting Dorman parts as they do make the majority of aftermarket parts. OEM parts are the way to go as the quality is better and they actually fit 99.9% of the time. Also the new replacement part had the weep hole relocated and seemed to be better built then the aftermarket (that could be the fact it actually fit up perfect the first time) A four hour job at home in my shop turned into a 8 hour job stretched out over two days, that is a waste of my time and really annoyed me to no end.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

Unfortunately things like that happen often nowadays..my friend who runs an auto repair shop runs into a dilema like this at least once a week..it frustrates him bad, because he's always booked up ,and one vehicle that has an issue like that can not only cost him lost time & labor, some customers who were expecting their car or truck to be fixed "today" are not always willing or able to do without their vehicle another day or more..having the one lift tied up with a vehicle half apart on it when he discovers the part is wrong can set his whole week off..

Parts not being the "right one" happens a lot too--some times he'll buy a part from a parts store, find out it is "close but no cigar" like your water pump--then he'll call the dealer as a last resort, and they need the VIN number to look up the part, because "they list more than one",while the parts stores listings showed only one listing for the same part..also being "one year off" can cause major headaches, its not like years ago when one part fit several years & models..now every part is "specific"..poorly made parts from the "big C" often bite him in the butt too..people like to bring their own parts they bought online too--that often causes a major headache..

Here is the thing on that water pump and it is that the same water pump was used from 1989 to 2016 that is 27 model years and included the 5.9 and the 6.7 Cummins engines. The sad thing about the auto store parts is you can easily see that this pump will be sent back multiple times and unless the parts guys get smart it will never be returned to the supplier and scrapped as it should be. The only other option is if I was at a independent garage and I was working on this, the bench grinder is over yonder and it likely would be used to get it to fit as the thought did cross my mind when I discovered the issue. Grind a little .06 off the offending area and slap the sucker in. It would have work fine if the person does the grinding slowly as to not over heat the cast iron but cast iron can still take a lot of heat.

The independent garage I frequently use will not accept work for customers to bring in their own parts. He has been bitten to many times. That shop also will only use OEM parts or USA made parts which do work the first time. As he said he understands cost conscious customers but what cost more original or come backs.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

My friend doesn't like using parts customers supplied, but will for some, because they are regulars and always come to him first--he does warn them in advance if he gets in a bind due to their parts not being correct or defective,he'll have to charge them more for tying up his lift..

(He had to have another friend with a ramp truck come get a car all apart off his lift so he could get it outside and fix other vehicles--he bought an old heavy duty warehouse flat bed cart with pneumatic tires so he could put it under and roll a FWD car outside that had its engine cradle dropped to do a clutch one day,and found the kit he was supplied was the wrong one--none of the local stores had or could get the right one the same day!)..he is alone most of the time too,so moving a "dead" vehicle like that is a major chore..

I have offered him a tractor to push dead cars around with, but he has no place to store it..

One example of how he got burned once was when a customer brought in an older Chevy pickup (square body)--it needed a new gas tank,so the customer bought one from Rock Auto, along with the new straps and a sending unit..

He got the old tank out with much difficulty,as it was nearly full, and some gas spilled ..then he noted is was about a foot longer than the new one!..the straps are different for a 16 gallon tank VS a 20 gallon one too..
He calls the customer, tells him he got the wrong tank,he says "but I ordered a 20 gallon one!"--customer called Rock Auto and they said "We sent you a 16 gallon one, because we were out of stock on the 20 gallon ones, and either one will fit!--we can issue a refund if you like--or we can send you a 20 gallon when we get more in"..

My friend was not happy, now his lift would be tied up,but at least he could push the truck outside until the right parts came..the customer ended up just going to a local supplier to get the 20 gallon tank, sending unit, and straps,it costed about $25 more..

Almost enough to pay the shipping cost to send the wrong parts back!--RockAuto did end up paying the shipping to return them though, after much hassle over the phone..
Online parts are not always a bargain..some things are,but its not always so..
