Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

The once a week in the spring work had to be done today and after I finished my inspector decided that he had to check out how to swipe the John Deere. He could not figure out how to start it so he he circled around it vbefore I came and got him away from it before he could raise his leg..

Later on he claimed that I was lazy in taking a stick to the compost heap and he decided to chew on it and leave pieces of the stick all over the yard.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

I went back to my garage and I decided to do a small project and it was to relocate the light switches next to the man door. The original man door was put in when the building was built and the garage wired then. After about 15 years the original door had a rotted frame and I replaced the door but it was hinged opposite the original door. I left the light switches where they were and since then I had to do the reach around the new door. Well today I finally rewired the light switches to the open side of the door.

The main reason when I got the replacement door hinged opposite was if the original man door was open and the if the garage door was open it and it was windy day the wind would catch the man door and slam it shut as it was originally installed. The new man door resolved that issue it would just stay open and if the garage door was open it would simply hold it open. I just kind of skipped the step of relocating the switches for the lights. It might take me a few days to get used not having to reach around the man door to flip the switches on for the lights in the shop

I had that problem, but my man door setup is a double door (meaning one of the doors always wants to close, and it's usually the primary one with the handle). So, I installed two of these old-school hooks. Less than $10 each at HD.

If that had worked I would have got it but since the door opened into the space of the garage with nothing to attach the hasp and it had the hinges on the left hand side as you looking at the door from the outside I had to come up with a different solution. The solution was to get one with the hinges on the right hand side and it stopped the slamming of the door by the wind when the main garage doors was open. I had to replace the door anyway due to rot on the frame and so I simply went with the hinges on the opposite side. When I got the replacement pre hung door from Lowe's I looked for a damaged door as it was going on my garage and not one that I would be looking at in my house. I found a damaged door for something like $40.00 and it had damage to the outside trim on the door. I had to remove the outside trim anyway as it was going on the steel building and it had J channel surround around the door anyway.

I should of done the relocation of the wiring for the light switches when I installed the replacement door but I was a bit on the lazy side and let it go until yesterday. It was just something to do at a later time and I finally addressed it.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

Well I finally finished today on the relocation of the lights from one side of the door to the other and it took longer to box in the wiring then it took to rewire the switches. At least now it will take a few days to get used to not having to reach around the door and muscle memory has already stuck as I started to do the reach around today to get to the lights only to realize that I had changed it to the proper location.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

The lawn and the property needed a good mowing and I waited until today due to the fact I hate to work in the heat we had until yesterday. Highs in the 80's is prime A/C and ice cream weather here in Western Washington. So I sat it out until today and with highs in the low 70's I attacked the yard, pasture and front ditch where I could.

My John Deere X590 still amazes and surprises me on what it can actually do and I got 90% of the ditch mowed to a manageable state and my weed trimmer can get the rest in a few days.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

Yeah only the two us even bid on them and it might have been more if it had not been a terrible day for a auction it was windy and raining sideways and there was just a small number of folks in the barn it was held in.

Today I had to redo the vent visors on my Dodge Ram. I wish folks would know that the 3M automotive 2 sided tape cannot be stretched and that the plastic on the vent visors has to have the molding plastic removed and the area where the tape goes should be scuffed up a little.

I was driving down the road at 50 MPH and I noticed that the drivers side front visor was lifting a little from the forward edge of the visor. I continued to drive into town and then ran the errand and stopped into the auto parts place and picked up a roll of 1/2" 3M tape. I get home and thankfully the vent visors did not come off and reach up and gently pulled the visor off with my hand. All the tape stuck to the body of my truck. One look told me that the company that made the visor did not properly prepare the plastic surface as there was no scuffing of the plastic and a few flashings from the manufacture process stuck in the tape that was on the body of my truck plus the company that made it had stretched the tape when they installed it onto the vent visor as it was less then 3/8ths of inch and wider then a 1/4". I could not find any 3M tape in the 3/8" only 1/4" and 1/2". I ended up doing all 4 of the vent visors as they all pulled off really easy.

I then removed all the 3M tape from the body of my truck and cleaned it 3 times with Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) now onto the vent visor and I took out a piece of scotch bright pad and lightly scuffed the tape surface of the plastic and then cleaned it 3 times with IPA and applied the new tape make sure not to stretch the tape and then reinstalling on the truck. This time it stuck hard and fast to the truck. At least I do know my prep work was correct as the tape remained on the body of the truck, I just wish they would not skip needed step to make for a quality installation and most likely the manufacture would blame the customer for not doing prep work when I actually know it was the manufacture being lazy.

Good catch!
Sometimes--well, often-times now--the end -user (us/you) have to MAKE things work....Here is where just plain common sense, and a little mechanical know-how goes a long way.

As one man told me--(sigh) He said--I wish I could remember all the things I have forgotten/or done> I know exactly what he meant...I'd settle for just the 'little things'... Ya know?

As the end user I made it work as designed. The steps are really simple and when the manufacture/seller of the vent visor likely will say it was improper installation. They were the ones that were improper. There was absolutely no preparing of the plastic surface and I suspect either it was really old 3M tape or most likely no prep work done to the plastic prior to putting on the 2 sided tape. I always wait a while to rate a seller on Amazon and I will rate the seller now. You can tell I will not rate this company very highly.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

I spent yesterday cleaning, changing the oil, sharpening the blades, replacing the air and fuel filter and waxing the X590 as it was right at 74 hours and I prefer to maintain my equipment in better then the recommended schedule. Today I then took out the machine and proceeded to make int all dirty again.

I mowed my entire five acres and then just blew it off, scrapped off the clippings and filled up the gas tank and put the X590 back in the garage. Oh well at least the puppy was clean for a while.

I also made a short clip of going around in circles

Tomorrow if I get the time the John Deere 2305 is going in for the same treatment.

Re: Wife Wanted Me Out of the House, So Off to the Garage and Clean it Out

I know what you mean about shoddy workmanship. I race sailboats, have bought three new boats over the past 20 years. Same manufacturer and design, all with the same basic issue: Zero quality control of the aluminum castings and extrusions.

The first time, I got a replacement mast (would bend under slight load). The other two times, the sail and rudders were damaged due to rubbing against rough edges. Not cool at all.

It is disappointing when you do have to do rework when it is not needed if done properly the first time. I have a buddy that owns a detailing shop and he does these installations all the time. He told me the other day that it does not surprise him at all with the vent visors to need to be taped over again right out of the box as they always do a poor prep job at the factory. I found out that on my truck and caught it before one flew off the truck at 70 MPH. Simple steps for a good installation are right there and understanding assembly work is something I am very familiar with working for over 40 years in the automotive and aircraft fields.

I actually knew better when I installed the vent visors a couple months ago as I was suspected the tape job on the visors was not the best but I proceeded anyway. I should have just stopped right there and got a roll of 3M automotive tape and did it over right from the start. I saw the shiny smooth plastic and knew that the visor was not properly prepared as it needs to have the shine taken off the plastic so that the tape has something to attach to better then smooth plastic that likely still has the oil used on them from the forming process. OH well lesson learned and nothing lost but a bit of a retirees time.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Most folks would just use them as-is, and probably lose one on the highway.
