Gloom, Dispair and Agony on Me!
Not just a song on Hee Haw, its really my daily life.
My C195: worked on it all spring. Replaced steering column (sprocket teeth stripped). I got two very nice 60" decks for $100.
Fixed almost everything that needed TLC. Mowed like butter.....beautiful.
I got to now 4.5 acres twice this spring..... Mowing for third time and
suddenly engine began racing wide open. I tried to shut it down, but wouldn't
shut down. I wrangled throttle up and down and it finally shut down.
Then it began chugging and blowing black smoke...
It limped into the garage and I examined it. Air cleaner assembly was loose.
Oh no! I knew exactly what happened. I took off air cleaner canister and filter.
Sure enough....10cent screw that mounts the canister to carburetor got loose and went right down the air intake of carb. 😭
The reason the engine couldn't be shut down? Likely screw lodged in the butterfly. If I had shut the tractor down at that moment? Would have saved the engine. But no, I had to mess with throttle allowing screw to get sucked into engine. It is either lodged in a valve or made small hole in piston.
No compression on one side. *sigh*
Got out C160 (old man Chandlers personal tractor) and got crank but no spark. Parked in dry garage..why?
I'm too frazzled to work on it. Took it to small engine repair.
I hate taking anything in for service. Service isn't what it used to be.
Now its "how can I turn $20 worth of work into $150".
