A question about my tractor

In 2016 I bought a new John Deere X-758 With 60 inch HC deck . The X-758 has been perfect in every way zero problems . I service it myself motor oil at 100 hours trans oil at 200 hours and it runs great . Now I find an oil problem I have 308 hours total now and for the first time find the motor oil a tad low (maybe a pint ) . The oil has 58 hours in the motor and is not that bad but this just stated . I use John Deere oil (15-40) and do change filters at the service . Also no oil leaks the tractor is clean zero under it and I park it in the same spot each time . The question is WHAT HAPPEN .

Another question was it completely full when you did the oil change? I have a X758 and it will use a 1/4 of a quart or so between changes. I would say that’s normal.

I know this is complete over kill, but I change my oil every 25 hours. I love doing maintenance and just enjoy it and is cheap insurance. I also use the JD oil filter and JD 15w-40 oil. From my experience, diesels use a little oil. I would not be alarmed if you are using a little oil. I would consider it normal for the most part. Maybe shorten your intervals or maybe try Shell Rotella or some other oil and see if you still use oil.

Twenty five hours is great. Fifty hours is plenty and 100 hours is, well, it's your mower!

A half pint at 58 hours in on an oil change isn't too bad, but with no more hours than you have total, I wouldn't expect it to get any worse. Half a pint is about at the 'add' mark on the dipstick. Oil consumption early is a sign the rings haven't fully seated, but I'd expect them to have seated well enough by 300 hours that that would not be the issue. I've used Rotella T since mine was new, I ran mine 100 hours before the first oil change and 100 hours since between changes; I vary less than 10 hours either way from schedule, and I might add a half pint once or twice between 100 hour changes, and I have 1500 hours on mine. I'd rather see oil loss from burning it rather than a puddle under the tractor, if it's no more than that.

if you run in hard it will use a little oil. my jd455 aws diesel oil / filter is changed every 50 hrs, transmission / filter 100hrs / fuel filter 25 hrs / air filter checked monthly and changed as needed.
i monitor the levels and use air to blow off engine and deck after every time i mow. I don't have a 3 pt but use it to move my trailers around, pull limbs to my burn pile and skid rocks that seem to grow higher after heavy rains. i use an old truck hood chained to my hitch, roll the rocks on and stack them behind a wall. great machine.

If you use sythetic oil, dumping it at 25 hours is a waste of good oil and money. My 2019 GMC truck recommends 7,500 miles between oil changes with synthetic oil. Synthetic is so much better than the old oils that it should be considered a different product. The biggie is to keep the air filter clean and then the oil will last longer and do its job better.

How do you guys put so many hours on?
This summer is the 4th summer of use, I just hit 45 hours total for all 4 years.
Grass and leafs and misc only, no snow.

And it now time for an oil change.

And, I'm thinking just the opposite: How do these guys get any tractor work done with all the time spent on maintenance. I run about 75 hours per year, and do my oil/filter/air filter change every spring. Fuel filter and plug every other Spring. And Hydro every 200 hours. I run summer fall winter and spring, so I feel like I need the tractor to be starting and running reliably 24x365. And, I've never had a problem. I have the x728, and the kawasaki gas burner never shows any oil use. But, no matter how many times I tried to raise the radiator fluid level to the middle of the marks on the overflow, it invariably disappeared down to just below the Low mark. I gave up, and it hasn't budged in 100 hours.

Hi Gene,
12 acres of fast growing grass, yuck. :)

I mow about 1 acre and it's all shaded and much is creeping charlie, so very slow growing. I typically cut 4-5 times a year.
It took 1.3 hours yesterday to cut all of it.

Jere,
what do you do get put on 75 a year? That would really cut into up North and fishing time.

The fishin' creek for me is only 5 minutes away. It's stocked with rainbow trout.
