Where is the compression release on JD LX 172?

Not sure which engine your tractor has but most are on the camshaft. Roger

Are you having problems with hard starting? Check that the valve clearances are correct.

LX172 uses a Kawasaki FC420V. It does have a compression release mechanism on the cam (see below).
