2003 GX345 keyswitch and battery light on

While I was mowing last night I turned off my tractor for a quick minute and went to start it and the battery was dead so I jumped it with my charger. A bit later I was mowing around a corner and my tractor stuttered but keep running and the after the next pass (thankfully the last pass) it killed and wouldn't turn on PTO. I got it started and drove it to the garage. Last night I put the charger on it (it was measuring less than 8 volts while running). Today it will start but the dash battery light is on all the time and the key won't turn it off. The PTO works, the battery light is on while running.

I'm not sure what my next step in diagnosing the issue is. I have had this beast for about 6 years and it has been fairly affordable to run. This year it has been getting some pulleys and a couple other pieces.

What do you think my issue is?

Thanks!

Mike in Eau Claire WI

Voltage regulator and/or bad battery. So take battery and have it tested at an auto parts store, most will have a charger and tester. Voltage regulator should be checked and so should you stator coil which generates AC for the rectifier/regulator to turn into DC. It would also be a good time to clean the connections which involve those items.

Re: 2003 GX345 keyswitch and battery light on

Mike, you said you've had the tractor 6 years. Have you replaced the battery & (if) when? If your battery voltage was only 8 volts, this means: battery is pretty much shot and will not accept a charge, or voltage regulator and/or stator coil not working...as Russ commented.

Although not familiar with the GX345, I'm thinking you have a bad key switch or bad connections to key switch. This could be why key doesn't turn engine off and battery is not charging. I "believe" voltage from stator & regulator connect to key switch and then charge battery. Bob

My first step would be to try another battery and see if the battery light goes out after a few minutes of run time. If not then you have a bad VR and most likely a bad battery. 6 years on a battery is definitely getting your money's worth!

So I have charged the battery and now the situation seems that the key switch is non functional as for turning it off.

I haven't looked into the charging issue as of yet, now I just disconnect the (-) - but I'll be looking at that too.

The first thing I'd do is replace the ignition switch! A bad ignition switch will also prevent your battery from charging...voltage regulator goes through ignition switch to battery terminal. Bob
