Feelings on a LT133?

My father in law needs a new riding mower for his property just to cut the grass and nothing else. His property is less than 1 acre in size and its very flat. Before he was using a cheap box store Toro riding mower to cut his grass but it started having some problems so he got rid of it. He is now retired and on a fixed income so he doesnt have a lot of money to spend on another tractor. With that being said, he was thinking of getting another cheap big box store mower and I told him he should look into getting a good used Deere since I have had such good luck with my X500 (9 years old now). He agreed and now the hunt is on.

I found a pretty clean LT133 for sale on craigslist for around $500. The hood is cracked but it seems to be in very nice shape. From my research these seem like they were the bottom of the range tractors at the time, but seem to be better built than the current L and D series found at Lowes and Home Depot. Is that correct? The thing that concerns me is the transmission isnt serviceable. I had a John Deere L120 that I bought new and the transmission failed after 120 hours and 4 years of use -- I sure would hate for this to happen to him. Do you think this would be a decent tractor for him? I can turn wrenches and I plan on servicing the tractor before I hand it over to him. Let me know of your thoughts on the LT133. The bummer is I missed a smoking deal on a really clean GT235 for $600, now that was a ton of tractor for so little money.

I vote no for the LT133. I prefer foot driven hydrostatic transmissions. That allows you to drive like a car with an automatic. The LT133 has a gear shifted transmission so one hand to steer and one hand to shift gears. Also, there are many hand controlled hydrostatic models which operate in the same manner as gear shifting.

You seem to already know that the really good deals get snatched up in minutes. In other words, expect to pay more if you cannot monitor craigslist.

Not sure what your budget is but $500 only get you a used lower end model tractor similar to the L120. Again, there are some spectacular deals, but don't count on them falling in your lap when you really need it.

The LX1xx and LX2xx series will have enable you to drain and fill the transmission. Same for GT2xx and GT3xx.

Most of the LTxxx do not have a drain and fill. You will have to remove the transmission and replace the trans fluid (commonly is motor oil). Search on here or watch YouTube for help.

Here is a $500 lx188 with bagger that needs a couple of hood bolts.

hinge repair kit for $30

It's missing a debris screen and has a hole in the front of the hood.

Thanks! I'll take a look at them. What is a debris screen?

Too bad Mark is having a party this year. Haven't talked to AO or David K in a while. Are you going to Atlanta next weekend?

Oh gotacha! Now I know what you are talking about.

Yeah it's unfortunate this year. Hopefully next year or the year after they will host Sharks in Hell again.

Atlanta sounds like fun, but unfortunately I can't make it.
