Question Thinking of buying JD345, am I bring bamoozled?

Fella near me is selling a 345. Says it’s a 1999, 20hp, liquid cooled, efi, 54” deck, 1900hrs on mower, 440hrs on the motor (new motor, not rebuilt, says it’s the same motor as the original one was). In the pictures it looks good, not all beat up, only 1 hole in green plastic under the grill (I don’t really care about aesthetics, I need a dependable mower). Everything looks good and I am going to look at it today.

HOWEVER, last night I was looking at the pictures, there is a closeup of the mower’s plate. I searched and found this picture on the JD website that shows model #s etc....

Am I reading this chart or plate wrong...? This is the first time I’ve looked up a lawn tractor’s vin#, so I could definitely be brainfarting right now. To me, the plate reads that it is a 1995 jd345 with 48” deck. The grill says 20hp, I cannot see the deck clarify it says 54”. According to my research, the 345 had an 18hp Kawasaki from 95-98, and switched to 20hp for the last 3 years 1999-2001. Am I being stupid or does this not add up?

Re: Thinking of buying JD345, am I bring bamoozled?

It certainly looks like a 1995 model to me and S/N from TractorData support that. Maybe the new motor is a 20HP so that "makes it" a like a new model year. The deck could have been swapped and you would need deck S/N to decode the year etc.

What is the funky green tape on the deck covering decals, kind of looks like a spray paint blocker? I assume there are records of engine swap? A 345 is a nice mower but you need to know what you're buying.

Entirely possible they changed the grill badge when the engine was changed out - maybe in '99? Is the person selling it the original owner? I would definitely ask for documentation on the engine swap.

I would expect a fairly reasonable price tag given the number of hours.

He asked 1,800 for it and a week later dropped to 1,600. I’m hoping to haggle the price down for these discrepancies!

I’ll ask for a closeup picture of the engine plate, and better pics of the deck.

Check out the model number on the engine. It should read FD611V if it is the newer engine. If not, run Forest run! CL has some of the most interesting fiction you will ever read. So does FB. I just wrote to a guy who had a 425 advertised as a 420 for over a month. He sent me the serial number and right on the sticker, it said "425" Duh! Another had a 2008 JD 345 for sale. I wrote and told him that it was not built in 2008 and he never took down the ad. As for the adjectives used they are off the chart of deceptive. "Like new", "Runs great" "Almost new seat/battery" turns out to be several years old. The only thing I believe is the address they put in the ad.

Even dealers don’t know what they have. I bought my 2004 GX being advertised and priced as a 2003. I knew it had to be newer as I saw the diff lock button. Sure enough a run of the serial said it was a 2004.

As for the deck, that’s insignificant considering how worn out decks get. It’s not unusual for the dealer to swap decks either at sale. This 345 may have been on the lot with a 48”, but the original buyer wanted a 54”... but maybe they only had a 54” on a 325.

Lastly, that center bumper piece is only $48 from JD. Could probably find it cheaper used, but either way, it’s nothing expensive.

They changed the engine, what about the hydro? Mover deck? 1900 is more hours than I would be comfortable with. There's nicer machines out there with less hours. Keep shopping.

I think I would pass on this one. Too many variables that don't add up.

Like mentioned, there are good ones out there with documented maintenance. I know mine have great records of everything I've done to them.

Way too many red flags with that Tractor-- would definitely pass on it -- too much money for a almost 25 year old tractor with those type discrepancies

If on CL, I would flag them.

I do flag them but all it does is hide them from me seeing them. I guess if they get enough "X"'s they will remove them but I am not sure. I do know that CL does not monitor the commercial ads like they used to. Now when I filter "Owners" only there are many commercial ads anyway.

If the tractor, engine, and deck are still sound after a thorough going over, AND a fully warmed up test run, offer whatever gets you over the discrepancies. If they don't accept, walk away.

Re: Thinking of buying JD345, am I bring bamoozled?

So I sent some texts to him, asking for pics of the engine and deck. I sent my phone number through Facebook and said call and maybe we can set something up. He sent 4 pics (deck plate, ultra-fuzzy radiator front view, and left/right sides of mower). Deck is 54”, Serial# *MO54CA021737*. That’s fine and dandy. Pics of the engine...lol... FD590V, plain as day.
So I’m my eyes, 2 things are 100% fact, 1-engine is an 18hp kawa with plastic cam gear. 2-the mower rolled off the line in 1995. (Am I wrong?)

I rechecked the Serial Numbers 10 times before he called. When he did, I said sorry to tell you but that isn’t a 1999, nor is it a 20hp engine, 10seconds into explaining how I got to that conclusion, he got all sortsa ****** and talked over me, lol. Basically said “nuh uh! We had it checked and all that, it’s a 1999 20horse, and said my price is firm and you aren’t going to get me to lower it by saying this stuff.” And hung up.
I say in text, that’s totally alright, as I’m not interested any longer because this feels like a scam, you are advertising something for what it’s not, also sorry but I have to report to Facebook because you are falsely advertising. (I don’t actually care myself, but the next person might not do any research before buying, which I feel bad for). I was very polite/professional in phone/text/Facebook interactions, just to throw that out there.

He texted back, “I’m not scamming you or anyone else [mechanic’s name] did the work for me so I can’t tell you anything else.”

On the phone I got the jist he’s an older fella that doesn’t really “do” technology much, I.e. looking up serial numbers or visiting JD website or downloading PDFs lol, so I don’t THINK he is intentionally trying to scam anyone, but who knows? Stranger things have happened. Either the prior owner lied to him, or mechanic lied about the new motor installed, or his “fact finder” was wrong about the serial and engine numbers,I dunno. Although....I find it kinda odd/hard to believe that throughout the whole process the words “TWENTY HORSEPOWER” or “EIGHTEEN HORSEPOWER” would *never* come up in conversation with a mechanic before, during, or after the installation. Lol, oh well I spose. The search for a much needed mower continues haha

Edit: I tend to be very transparent and detailed, I apologize for the long winded post

Thumbs up Re: Thinking of buying JD345, am I bring bamoozled?

No apology necessary Jeff, we've all been there with Facebook and Craigslist. I say Caveat Emptor, let the buyer beware. There are scammers and there are just plain ignorant (as in a person lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated or unsophisticated) people all over Craigslist and Facebook. Keep looking and keep running it by us on this forum.

Re: Thinking of buying JD345, am I bring bamoozled?

Soooo the mechanic's name that the seller told me is in fact not the mechanic's actual name, but a big ol' John Deere dealer with 13 locations in central/west of Illinois. I stumbled upon this when I noticed the name "Sullivan Martin, Inc" while perusing tractorhouse.
I'm baffled. Have a good day fellas haha
