Re: JD 210 quit wont restart

Yes, the wires at the back of the dash that connect to the ignition plug go into a plastic shroud. there are 5 blade connectors inside. I just ordered a new ignition key for the tractor so that will rule that out - or should.

Keep in mind those inaccessable connections inside that harness plug on the key switch can cause more trouble than the switch itself. Did any of the sellers offer a new multiplug with the switch that you could splice into your existing harness?

You shouldn't see more the 3 or 4 ohms resistance across the + and - terminals on the coil. (no wiring connected please.) Secondary resistance is within spec.

Re: JD 210 quit wont restart

I would check the key switch i had a guy a while back said he had spark but it seemed week and he thought he had a coil issue. his would run then just die and not fire. So i told his to jiggle the key switch and see what happens. he got it to fire again and he jiggled the key switch and she coughed and sputtered. he ended up giving me back the coil i told he probably didnt need and bought a new key switch. problem was solved!

garden tractor hoarder!

I'll replace that first then for a test to rule out whether it's that, the coil or the points.

Re: JD 210 quit wont restart

you mean replacing the other half of the plug that has the 5 flat blades? Nope, nobody offered it up. I think the switch may be what is going on as it would not turn over for a bit after it quit mowing the lawn. I had to play with it for around 10 minutes to get it to turn over again. I was moving the shift lever around for a bit thinking it was the neutral switch.

Re: JD 210 quit wont restart

Hi:

I installed the new ignition switch, coil + condensor, new plug wire and points. Points set at 20 thousands. Still no fire. Guy I'm working on this with said try running a wire from the + battery terminal to the + post on the coil and turn it over. Started first click. So, does that mean I have a bad regulator? or.....what?

Suggestions??

Re: JD 210 quit wont restart

Is it possible that you have installed a poor coil?

It means you don't have power to the coil + thru normal routing.

Use a test light... check for power into the ign switch, power out of the ign switch, and follow it all the way to the coil. Maybe a safety neutral switch, or pto / blades engaged.

Re: JD 210 quit wont restart

do you have to open up the wire (ie: break the surrounding shield) to probe each wire in the bundle that connects to the 5 flat blade connectors?

No, preferrably don't puncture the wires, stick the probe into the multi plug on the key switch, where the wires come out, until you touch the metal terminal. Do the same at each connection/terminal, verifying power at each point, until you get to the coil.

Although it has happened, wires rarely fail in the middle. It's always the connections at the ends.
