JD 345 losing revs & power, then comes back

Hi all,

Picked up a well-used (but fully serviced and single prior owner) JD 345 a month ago. First few days of use it's been terrific - not a glitch at all. Then yesterday, in probably the hottest weather we've had (if it makes a difference) of 80F I found the engine lost revs and power for a bit and then after 30-45 secs kicked back into full power. It seemed that if I ran it for a while and then took off the power or front drive it would start to drop and then bounce around the revs, but with never enough to get the deck and blower back moving again - happened 4-5 times before I called it a day - once it got the power back it'd run for 5mins or so then drop again. Definitely first time it's happened - and the very first instance was after a 400 yd drive up to dump the bags when I ran it on highish revs before I turned it off momentarily - starting up again and it had the first set of hiccups.

I did some searching and maybe it's dirt in the fuel line? I should clean out the carb? I'm going to call the seller (local dealer - well regarded) and see what they say, but thought I'd post here as well. Unit is 2000/01 - the later version.

[EDIT] I couldn't figure if up/down orientation of the tractor had any effect e.g. if going slight downhill or uphill triggered the drop. Neither did going uphill/downhill seem to fix it.

Thanks everyone,

Dirty carb/fuel system is my guess. Start with checking the fuel filter and the fuel lines from tank to the carb.

Two things to consider.

Ask the PO if he ever replaced the TDM. They are the scourge of later 345's and GX345's. Will drive you crazy with all kinds of symptoms. Its a $25-30 part that's pretty easy to replace. I've now replaced it twice in about 300 hrs on my GX, My 345 is an older one without this confounded thing........

And, check to see if the vent hole in the gas cap is plugged.
