John Deere 420 fair price?

So I’m still working on a JD 285 that I bought and just ordered engine parts from Pete’s Small Engine. Now my father in law is buying a X730 and selling his 420. Motor burns oil, not original Onan, and the rear axle seal leaks. What’s a fair price to offer for this? Other than those two issues he always meticulously takes care of his stuff and bought it in 1986. Two years ago had the deck welded and patched, this year new battery, with all filters and fluids replaced. So I know it’s been taken care of but what’s a good price? I don’t want to screw my father in law. It don’t want to be screwed either.
Thanks,
Shawn

Re: John Deere 420 fair price?

So the work on the onan is likely to be a few hundred in parts and about $500 in labor or so. Is it a rear leak or is the deck lift hydraulic leaking down on the rear end? That may just be a loose connection. The deck needed patched and I suspect if you pull the belt covers off then there is more rust under them. So I would agree that your about $1,000 to $1,250 or so.

Yeah it’s not the original Onan, but a Briggs. As far as the deck it was totally repaired two years ago by a welder near him. Now he cheaped out and only sprayed it black, he whines about JD yellow being more expensive at his JD dealer🏻. The rear axle seal leaks and JD quoted him 2k, if I remember right to fix! I just replaced a axle seal in the 285 and can’t see 2k but maybe there’s more to it or he mis heard them. The dealer told him to keep adding 30 weight and don’t let it run dry and it’ll run for a while...I’m assuming the rings are letting it burn oil. Everything else is in top shape but those are biggies so I was assuming 1k for an offer and see where he’s at.
Thanks guys!
