1984 316 Onan Died turning left.

Progressively got worse. As I would lurch forward it would sputter then come back. The same thing happens when I turn on the pto for mowing. It stumbles for about a second then comes back. I just put it in reverse and as I was rotating around it just died. It recently received a full tuneup and battery is good. Iíve almost had enough. I started it back up and it didnít do it again. Usually runs great. I mean, amazingly well. But Iíve been chasing this for two years.

Your need to go through the whole fuel system (from tank to carb, including pump on engine). I betting carb is screwed up (inlet seat, inlet valve, float).

Ok. I can do that. I just had someone do it last summer and it did seem to smooth out for a while. I noticed the governor hunting after itís warm too. Could it be governor related? The carb has been suspected for a while. Might just buy a new one.

I replaced mine because I could not run the mower without it dying, the rebuild kit had issues with the little weight valve sticking to sides(to large) and not seating in the valve seat either.

Governor would be a related issue because it seeing a drop in rpm for a given throttle position and wants to increase speed but can't get fuel it needs. It dies on turning left because the jets are on the left side of carb and g-force is taking fuel away.

My Onan powered 420 did that when the fuel filter so plugged that the carburetor bowl could not stay full.

Well that machine won't cut it in NASCAR!

Have you checked the crankcase line to the impulse fuel pump? Sounds like you aren't getting good flow.

Re: 1984 316 Onan Died turning left.

Well, the fuel system hasnít been seriously checked out this whole time(besides the carb cleanings). The pickup and the line from the tank is new, but Iíve wondered about the fuel pump. Perhaps the gasket is bad or the pump could be slipping. Iíve also considered switching out to an electric pump and just bypassing the old one. Again, it runs great most of the time but just seems like it gets ďoffĒ then starts doing this. Iíll check out some fuel issues first.

In checking the line from the crankcase, what would I be looking for?

Iíll also check the filter, but I know it is new, as of 2 weeks ago.

If a plate in the battery is bad, and falls over and shorts on another plate, could that cause any of this? Itís a car battery, not a small mower battery.

Thanks everyone.

Those models did use a large battery, and any time I have had electrical issues, the first thing is check the battery. I take mine down to NAPA and get it tested. Then it is the alternator/generator/VR, the first 2 can also be checked by the local NAPA.

Re: 1984 316 Onan Died turning left.

They have a crankcase breather tube from the back of the fuel pump to the crankcase. The pulses from the crankcase due to piston movement operate the fuel pump. Any holes or leaks or loose connection on that hose can cause the fuel pump from working at full power.
