Value of JD 345 with busted hood, high hours

Today I picked up a John Deere 345. Sorry, haven't taken pictures yet. I hadn't bothered to ask about the hours before making the 2 hour drive. I was surprised to see 2253 hours. I don't really have the mechanical ability to keep up with a high hour machine. But I also didn't want to drive home empty handed, so I gave $400 for it.

However, it runs really well. It has the 18hp liquid cooled Kawasaki. It turns great. I assume someone at some point replaced the plastic cam gear, because I don't think it would make it to 2253 hours with a plastic one. It cut well, but obviously needs blades sharpened or new blades. The upper hood is not there and the lower hood has a couple holes/cracks (PO ran it into the back of a truck). Seat is a yellow replacement seat. It has a 48 inch "convertible" deck

Since I can't do much outside of regular maintenance items, I'm considering just putting it back up for sale. Any ideas what the value of this is, assuming a pretty busted hood and high hours?

Well, yeah, that was my first thought. Because hey, the fair market value today by an arms length purchaser on the exact same mower was $400. But I want someone to tell me its worth $700.

+1, especially when they need to immediately put money into it or mow their lawn with no hood. If you are going to ask $700, I'd find a cheap hood first.

I love jokes. Find a "cheap hood" for a John Deere. Can't believe how expensive those things are...and all the used ones are broken. I'll see what I can find

The good news is you don't have a ton of money in it and someone might be interested in it for parts. That is a lot of hours even on a liquid-cooled.

I'ld find a hood and use it. All you have invested is $400, 1 season and you have your money back.

I may just keep it. I can live with the lower hood. Flip mfg has an upper hood for $79 shipped. Not sure what clips and such I may need to attach it. The thing does run really good and power steering is really nice.

That will run for many more hours. I had one with more hours than that but all cosmetics were good yet. Sold it for $800. I would use it and if it breaks sell it for $200.

Re: Value of JD 345 with busted hood, high hours

I just missed out on a GX345 that had no hood at all, everything was missing but the guy had used it for years as a fertilizer spreader only so it had low time, 332 hours. He wanted $1500 and I refused to go that high. A total hood/grille with all the decals etc is $900 and a new seat is $130. It was also the non-diff lock model. I am sure it needed other things but as a flipper, it left me with no room for a profit. The point is that if it runs well it can be used like it is for as long as you need it like this guy did. You got it for a decent price so why sell it?

If someone leaves the key in the on position, it will rack up hours for weeks....

Re: Value of JD 345 with busted hood, high hours

Your right about leaving the key on. I picked up a 1997 345 with 2138 hours. Has the steel cam gear. I know because i checked. Anyway this thing runs like a dream, uses no oil and now has over 2200 hours on it because i left the key on.
It has no plastic but I don't care. I am adding to my stable. 185, 318, 322 and 345. Love them all.
