Help Engine Stalls on 180 when PTO engaged

John Deere 180 5 Speed
Engine runs great, until you turn the PTO on.

PTO clicks when the engine is off and ignition switch is the on position and PTO switch is tuned on.

Things I have tried so far.

1) Deck belt is disconnected
2) Power is getting to the PTO
3) Tried a different ignition switch from another working tractor
4) Tried a different PTO switch from another tractor
5) Disconnected the seat switch, nothing changed
6) Jumped the seat switch, nothing changed
7) Disconnected the transaxle switch, nothing changed
8) Jumped the transaxle switch, nothing changed

I am out of ideas. What am I missing or doing wrong?
Is there another switch somewhere?
Bad PTO?
Could I have a short somewhere?

This thing is driving me crazy.

Re: Engine Stalls on 180 when PTO engaged

I don't know much about a 180, nothing actually, but I'm familiar with the pto's. Disconnect wire from pto, start tractor, and engage (disconnected) pto. If tractor continues to run, problem is coil windings partially shorted, or weak battery. Perhaps someone can post ohm value of your coil. If tractor stalls, possibly bad wiring from pto switch to pto...otherwise no ideas! Bob

Re: Engine Stalls on 180 when PTO engaged

Firstly, is the engine stopping like you turned off the key or does it instantly lock up ?

If it's the first then you need to isolate the ignition system from the rest of the wiring harness. I think this mower has a Kawasaki motor and I think they have magic boxes instead of a simple coil/magneto. If it had a coil/magneto just disconnecting the kill wire would isolate the ign and you could then try to find the wiring issue.

If it has a battery powered ign you are going to have to figure out the wiring so that you can add a jumper wire to power the ign. Screwing up could fry the ign.

Good luck

What do you mean by "jumped the switch"? Modern safety switches are designed to be tamper proof. You could think you have it bypassed, but it is not.

Re: Engine Stalls on 180 when PTO engaged

Load test your battery if you can... Engaging the PTO with the engine running puts a huge electrical load on your charging system. Having a weak battery will likely cause it to die like that...
