Tie rod play on my X748

When I changed the Hydro oil on my 748 AWD I had to jack it up & remove the front wheels to drain the oil in the front. Before I removed the wheels I noticed some side to side play in the tie rod. I have always greased it & never paid attention if there was any play in it before. The play seems to be in the ball joints as the nuts are both tight. I do not notice it when driving. The part number is AM881106 ($383.00) Yikes, I sure don't want to spend that if it is a normal design.
If any of you guys with 748 or 728 tractors happen to have your front end jacked up please check your side to side play. I will probably take it to the dealer & have them look at it.
Tractor has 480 hours on it.
Thanks,
Jerry

Tie rod play on my X748

I used my center link / tie rods till I thought it was going to fall apart. then finally replaced it, I wouldn't take it to dealer for that, you can do it yourself.

Re: Tie rod play on my X748

My x749 has some play side to side, but it is mostly due to slop in the power steering cylinder's ball joint ends. I looked at a pic of your tie rod p# on greenfarmparts and it looks possible to just replace the ends rather than the entire assembly. They dont list part numbers, but it may be possible to look around for them. I have repaired several of my rear linkages this way. Not only is it cheaper to repair them, but I have used much better parts than factory so they should outlast me.

-Here is a link to a thread that gave me some ideas on how to upgrade my tie rods. Obviously your machine is not AWS but the same logic can still apply.https://www.mytractorforum.com/12-jo...ard-parts.html

Another idea, replace the rod ends. This poster replaced front and rear links, 2 heim ends $20 plus misc hardware. Page 2 has pics of member replacing ends on a x749 same as x748 AWD.

Re: Tie rod play on my X748

Thanks for the replies.
I will have to look at mine again but it looked like it was all one piece & the ball joints are welded on.
I would not have the dealer replace it, I just wanted to make sure the play was not normal before I would order a new one.
The picture of the new one appears to be different than mine. Mine is a straight rod & the replacement part looks like it has a bend on each end.
At that price I probably will leave for a while.
I wish I had the equipment & skills to redo it with new ends but at my age it is safer & easier to replace it when it gets worse.

Re: Tie rod play on my X748

It's a one piece part. The ends are welded on. My guess it they are welded on so someone can't screw up new ones. Interestingly enough... I have to wonder if a 1445 tie rod fits an X748.... Those ends are replaceable....

480 hrs. should still be under warranty, right? I can't imagine them being worn that soon unless defective. My '08 X748 with MFWD has just over 1450 hrs and the rod ends have no slop at all. Could it be the AWD's have some play built in as part of the proportioning system for the front drive? I'd definitely have the dealer look at it, but if, as you say, you don't notice it when you use the tractor, don't buy yourself trouble by fixing what ain't broke.

Re: Tie rod play on my X748

The tractor is a 2011 so the warranty has expired.
The replacement part drawing looks a little different. If they made some improvement like heavier ball joints & being able to replace only them and not the whole thing I would feel better about ordering it.

At that price I think if I were you before I bought one I'd take my old tie rod to a local machine shop and get a price to cut the ends off and weld in threaded inserts. Then buy some good quality ball joints.

If I were me, I'd just do it myself! 🙂

Re: Tie rod play on my X748

The old center link had this much play when I bought my little X595 beast. I think it have gone a lot longer, however, I didn't want to drive two hours to plow day & it falls apart.

After seeing this thread, the other day I put my 2003 x595's front wheels in the air using the loader bucket and checked steering rod free play. Virtually zero. I guess it depends on the use.

Thanks for the pictures.
I have not tried to remove my tie rod yet. Did yours come off easy or did it take a lot of force with a hammer or puller?

Re: Tie rod play on my X748

Just curious, but did the original tie rod joints have zerk fittings, and were they used?
