Smile What Pump for front PTO on JD 400

I'm starting the project to add a hydraulic pump to the front PTO on my '82 JD 400.

This will allow me to move the loader to the PTO pump and will provide for a backhoe if I can ever find one.

First question is what does everyone recommend for a pump. From what I've been reading, it sounds like anything around 5 - 6 GPM should do fine. Any particular brand, model recommended? And of course a fantastic price. :-)

Next issue to solve is how to attach the pump to the PTO which is a 1 inch, 15 spline. I've ordered a female adaptor to fit the PTO, so if I can't find what I need I'll just have to start welding something together to fit whatever pump I come up with.

Can't go wrong with a JD.

thx

Re: What Pump for front PTO on JD 400

Just noticed your thread. I'm doing a refurb on my 1980 and just finished getting the stuff for the new front pump. Below are the links to the threads. It will save you a LOT of time in selecting. The Lovejoy coupler was the key and is a plug-n-play. I can also give you the pump spec.

Re: What Pump for front PTO on JD 400

Picked up the backhoe yesterday. A Woods BH6000. Great condition. I can now order the pump now that I know what size I need.

WOW! That thing is beefy! What size is the bucket? How does it mount to the tractor?

I laughed out loud when I saw the trailer....

Re: What Pump for front PTO on JD 400

It's a 9" or 10" bucket. Haven't measured it yet. It came with 3-Pt hitch setup buy I have a subframe already for the loader so will be working on figuring out how to attach the Bh to the subframe.

Re: What Pump for front PTO on JD 400

The Brantley has a cantilever frame which attaches to the rear axle boss with a pivot pin and long arms hook to a heavy cross brace under the engine.
I shimmed the rear pins to eliminate any side to side movement.

That looks great! I'm thinking you have a Plasma cutter to play with.

Nope - have air tools and MIG welder. That's the stock mounting platform.

Here's photos of the pump mount I fabricated. It works really slick. The Lovejoy coupler is perfect. Once aligned, you can remove and reinstall without realigning again. Easier to change belts or maintenance.

I have the pump spec and coupler numbers if you want them.

Re: What Pump for front PTO on JD 400

I don't have any drawings, because the mounting bracket was made on the fly. I can provide dimensions and you can pretty much figure it out.

Aligning the coupler was a whole lot easier than expected. I used a band clamp to hold all three pieces together and matched the gap between each piece all the way around. Then slid the whole thing on the PTO output spline and simply bolted the bracket to the tractor - then the pump to the bracket. Then the bracket can be removed without disturbing the shaft alignment.

Slick eh?

Re: What Pump for front PTO on JD 400

The bracket is cut to match the pulley guard and bolts right over the top of it. Just use longer bolts and clean the threads down a little inside the flange.

I've been working on how to mount the pump. Your design looks good. My next project.

Thanks
