2018 X738 oil change

My mechanical knowledge is limited, to say the least. But I have decided to teach myself how to perform some maintenance on my new X738 due to the fact that the older I get the cheaper I am getting and the nearest JD dealer is almost an hour away.

So I watched some videos on changing the oil on the X700 series but the videos aren't matching up to my machine. For example, one video shows a nut that has to be loosened at what appears the front of the machine and also a green hose tucked up under the chassis where the oil drains from. Nope. Not on mine. (There is a green hose under the oil filter which matches the videos. But there is supposed to be a second one.)

According to the online manual, it seems some things have changed since those videos were posted, as now they are directing you to the first picture I attached. There appears to be a clear hose there. I can not find that for the life of me.

Now in photo #2, that is what I believe might be new and where the oil drains from.

Anyone have any help they can provide or guidance?

Check out this manual online. It shows the valve you've taken a picture of. (Very nice 1/4-turn valve, BTW!!)

OMUC16260

When you search the manuals online for X738, note that here are many choices based on "N.A." (North American) or "Export" (other regions), as well as by serial number range. For sure, things must keep changing as time goes on.

The link I provided appears to be for 2017. There is a newer 2018 version, but the pictures didn't work for me.

I've noticed that with a lot of the newer manuals. The images do not show up. At first I thought it was my browser but I've tried several computers and they all display the same. Instead of the image you get this:

Thanks for that link!

I just found a video of an oil change on a 739 which has the valve from my 2nd photo. I can’t believe that’s all it takes to drain the oil after seeing some of the complaints in the other videos. But at least JD made it easier for us to change it ourselves!

It takes 10 minutes you wait for the oil to drain longer than the job takes. I use rubber gloves to remove the filter and to reinstall it that way it never gets too tight. Most guys at home put that filter on way too tight. It just has to be tight enough not to leak. I have been doing it like this on everything I own car, truck, Motorcycle. This will also prevent you from ever having to watch one of those videos on the filter is on too tight.

Run your engine for several minutes so that the oil will be good & warm. It'll drain better this way.
Before opening the petcock to drain the oil, open up the oil filler on the top of the engine. This allows the oil to flow more quickly taking out more contaminants. When most of the oil has dropped out, close the drain and move your collector (I use a coffee can) under the filter and twist the filter 'til it starts to drain. When the filter has quit draining, unscrew it all the way off (you'll find even more oil!). Pour a bit of oil into the new filter and slosh it around to prep the filter for quick oil penetration. Apply a little oil to the gasket on the new filter with your finger and spin the new filter on. When it first makes contact, turn 2/3 of a revolution more. Now open up the petcock again and see how much oil you get out. When it quits draining, Close the petcock. Fill the engine up to the full mark. Replace the filler cap and start the engine. Run @ a fast idle for about a minute. This makes certain your filter is now full of oil. Shut 'er down and wait a minute before checking the dipstick. Add oil as necessary.
You said you are new at this procedure and I wished I'd had this info when I first started!

Ok I'm jealous! I have owned my X738 for exactly a year now and I don't have that cool valve on mine. Not to be outdone I'm calling my dealer tomorrow or better yet stopping by to order that valve. Hopefully it can be easily installed. It sure will make changing oil a lot easier. Does the oil just drain straight down?

Yes, it does. I love the valve. It makes changing the oil a 10-minute job. For me, I open the valve and while the oil is draining I change the filter and clean up around it and by that time the oil is done draining. It really that fast.:00000033:
