Help 2011 X540 or 2007 X720

Just when I thought I was set on buying an X540, I came across an X720 which might be available for a little more.
Bottom line:
2011 X540 with almost 1000 hours (trying to get more maintenance info from the past several years)
2007 X720 with almost 1500 hours. $500-$600 more
Both with 54" deck

Any comments? I will use tractor for home acreage (2 acres). Some slopes and at times wet. Should I be afraid of the 1500 hours? Is the 2007 closer to more maintenance issues? Using it mostly to mow, light yard/garden work, and potential plowing in the winter (New England). Is the 720 a much better grade of machine? Wrestling with this one and may need to make a decision this weekend.

Re: 2011 X540 or 2007 X720

I have a 2012 X720 with just over 400 hours, & love it, However, 1500 hours on an X720 I'd want an extended test drive & with what little info is provided at this time I wouldn't go over $3999 because of the hours. have any pictures? When I bought my X485 I think I annoyed the previous owner with my 1/2 hour test drive, I cut 1/2 of his front yard.

Thanks for the feedback. I saw a couple pix and the outside looked okay. Can you share what you were 'looking for' during the long test drive? I don't feel very confident to know what or how to check for certain critical items. Can you share more of how you test drove? That will serve me better for any tractor I look at. Thanks.

Re: 2011 X540 or 2007 X720

I wanted to get the engine up to full operating temperature was my goal, these Kawasaki's heat up fast, so it was hot after 5 minutes, & see if noises developed as the whole machine was being used, checking for smoke, you can't expect perfection from a 11 year old machine, however you do want to know what your getting. I also made sure the gauge cluster worked. on the X720's the gauge cluster is the brain to the whole machine, engine won't crank, deck won't come on unless the cluster says so, they are pretty good clusters, however you don't want to drop $400 on something w/o knowing it up front. was the X720 home use? or commercial? After my test drive & tractor was shut off I checked for movement in mower spindles. The owner told me he greased the mower wheels by the book, about every 25 hours, which wasn't enough all four little wheels were shot. I'm sure I'll think of more.

This is something I never thought of. Thanks.

Hmm. How much movement is acceptable? Any?

These are really basic questions, but this is where I am at. I have not had enough experience to know what and HOW to check. Your feedback is a great start.

Re: 2011 X540 or 2007 X720

the best would be just a hair, don't want the blade to rock 1/8", however, replacing bearings in deck wouldn't be the end of the world, just knowing it up front & priced accordingly. If you're buying from private owner he might not like it if you removed drive belt & turned pulleys by hand to listen and feel for rough bearings. I've taken belt off pulleys in a snap, putting back on takes about 45 seconds by yourself.

If you are not comfortable working on the tractor, or feel comfortable doing it. Id be very cautious buying any tractor over 1,000 hours, unless its been meticulously maintained you are going to have to work on it. As long as you are comfortable with that fact up front. Either tractor will do job for you. Obviously the X720 is better stronger machine. It also has 500 more hours and 4 years older so without seeing pics or maintenance records impossible to say which one is better deal

No maintenance records for the 720. The current owner has been using it and mows 3 acres currently with it and claims no issues. And yes the age and the hours concern me. The 540 has a lot of hours and was owned by a town to mow their cemetery and recreation area. It was maintained by the town and was traded in as scheduled after 7 years of usage. I will speak to the Public Works foreman next week to hopefully learn more specifics (good or bad).

No Maintenance records on a 11 year old tractor with 1500 hours would be a deal breaker for me personally Id lean towards the X540- even though it has high hours the fact it was owned by town, it more than likely received regular maintenance and town should have records to prove it

Thanks. One person I spoke to at the town shared where it was used, and that they did their own maintenance. He also shared that it hit the 7 year cycle for replacement (which lined up with info I had already gotten regarding both original sale and trade in dates). I will speak to Public Works person next week for details. I just want to make sure that someone didn't abuse it or that there was some kind of accident, etc. Not perfect, but it is offered as a pretty reasonable deal within my budget, and therefore worth the extra conversations.

Imho, forget the x720. Just scanning what you've posted so far, just too many red flags. For 2 acres mowing, and no ground engagement, you don't need it anyway. However, go over the x540 closely as well. 1000 hrs is no spring chicken, so that needs to be solid as well.

I am getting that feeling as well. Do you have a checklist of things to evaluate when looking at a tractor? If there is a list, how does one 'check' for those things? Some are visual, but others may require engaging things a certain way to test for proper functioning. Are there any 'tricks of the trade?'

You have told us the difference in prices, but what are they asking for each tractor? Not trying to pry into your finances, but this and a few pics would be very helpful.

I can check for pix but basically:
X540 - $2500
X720 - $3100
