Thanks! Triple digits? It's going to be fun. It's the most high maintenance thing I own. Noticed over the weekend while moving it around in the garage that the water pump gasket is starting to leak again so gotta make a new one of those before the trip. Will be interesting to see what it "needs" after this trip.

Thanks, Glenn. You only get one life on this Earth so may as well enjoy it or die doing what you love.

Re: Adventures with a 1986 KTM MXC 500 Widowmaker

Just read your story about this KTM Monster.

I grew up in the 70's riding a Kawasaki 250 two stroke. I thought it was a bad *** bike until a friend bought a 1976 Yamaha YZ400. Your description of the power of your KTM brought back the memory of my first ride on that beast... Like you I was shaking when I got off that bike. Unbelievable power on demand. That friend ending up getting badly injured when he lost control of it and smacked a car. Bike was totaled, and friend was in the hospital for almost a year with multiple broken bones and spinal injuries.

Being older, wiser and more fragile, I now ride a 2007 Honda Shadow Aero...

Re: Adventures with a 1986 KTM MXC 500 Widowmaker

Thanks to a reference and advice provided by another vintage KTM enthusiast on another site, I worked with SLM Graphics in Texas to create a kit made for the 3.1 gallon desert tank. There were no existing decal kits for this particular tank that I could find anywhere. I have to hand it to Skip who I worked with on this project who was very friendly and helpful. Originally I was going to ship the tank to him but he ended up finding the same tank that he had available which made things a lot easier! He also sent me some pictures along the way to illustrate the process which was cool. It's a perforated design and the graphic material is thick and durable.

I think this overlay was definitely worth it.

On a completely different note (and some have already seen these pics), but as an update for this thread, I took a trip with a couple of my bikes down to SoCal in May. I camped one night in the Mojave Desert and rode the KTM in its natural environment. What a great experience and opportunity to ride her in the element she was truly built for; this has been a bucket list item for me ever since I got the bike. I've included a few photos from that trip for fun as well (Note: this was before the new decals were added).

Also just replaced the rear wheel bearings and caliper bearing as well. After I got back from the trip, the bike didn't want to roll out of the trailer and found out the rear carrier bearing had seized up.'

Re: Adventures with a 1986 KTM MXC 500 Widowmaker

Your description of riding it reminds me of a friends honda 85 CR500r.
Similar BEAST. They thing would pull the wheel in 5th gear!
You are in awe from the first time yo ride it and pretty much every time!

I later had an 86 CR250r and sold it to a guy who rode and and had a big smile on his face and said I'll take it. Didn't even ask me to take less. I thought MAN he would'a loved the 500!!

But starting a CR500 is a different story. They DO NOT like to start. So bad that the kick start wears out ans starts to slip and BANG on the leg....PAIN.
But once it is running it is unstoppable!!!

Re: Adventures with a 1986 KTM MXC 500 Widowmaker

Here's some pictures from a camping trip to Easter, WA I took last weekend with the bike. Nice time, I was a little worried about high temps going in July but it turned out to be just right with 84-86 degrees. It was super windy though all night long so I didn't get much more than a couple hours worth. The Lake Chelan Poker Run was going on too which added another highlight to the trip to check out in the evening. The sound of the boats carried for miles, I could hear them from way up in the hills above.

Thanks, Jere, it was a nice time. May go back in Sept for one more ride on it this year.
