Default Ford LGT16D- At What RPM do you mow

I have a really nice LGT16D and mow bahia type lawn grass. It seems that I go through a belt every year. I use to eat them up more frequently but I changed the pulleys and replaced the bearings in the deck. The mower just turned 400 hours. I put about 25 hours a year on it. I am not the original owner. I got it with just over 300 hours.

I was mowing at 2000 but bumped it up a little with this years fast growing grass.

Anyone know what the engine speed should be?

Thanks,

I think most folks mow at wide open throttle. Basically, 3,600 rpm or very close to it. Not a good idea to mow at 2,000rpm especially with a hydrostatic tranny. Most single cylinder engines are meant to operate at WOT.

here is a threat that covers this info......

I'm not sure you will get 3600 rpm out of that diesel. They might use a lower engine rpm and gear it up some for the mower deck. But I don't have the manual on the 16D so I'm not sure.

The last I read the maximum blade tip speed is something like 19,000 feet/min. With some pulley diameters and blade length you can calculate your mower blade tip speed and compare the 2000 rpm to determine if that is in the ball park.

Just as a benchmark: My Ford 1100 that has a 2 cyl Shibaura diesel has a top RPM around 2600 to drive the PTO at 540.
