Default Removing Bolens Steering Shaft

I have a Bolens ridiing 42" mower with the teeth striped at that bottom of the shaft. I have taken the deck off and the wheel off but can't remove the shaft. I see that there is a phillips head screw/bolt that attaches it underneath but is there a special way to get it off as it won't turn?

The model number would help us help you. Also, are you just wanting to fix this or is this a restoration?

Not sure of the model number right now as I'm at work. I bought it in 2002 and am trying to fix it. Thanks.

Welcome to MTF. The newer Bolens are MTD made, so you would get more answers in that subforum.

But I can answer your question. The slightly older MTD's used a bolt instead of that screw. Put it back with the correct length bolt.

There are 2 bolts that hold the sector gear plate in. Remove them. Now you can move the gear out of your way. Hold the screw with a phillips head socket on a rachet.Do not try to turn it.

Now have someone else turn the steering wheel, and it should come loose.

The gear and shaft is sold as one piece. I believe they run around $45.
Check the plastic hex bushing the steering shaft goes into. They are almost always bad. Price $3.49.

There ia a bushing under the steering sector gear. Make sure it is good. It is only a couple bucks to replace.

But please post your model number info. Incase yours is slightly different.
Post the entire number so I can look it up. Sticker should be under your seat.

Pinion gear failures are caused by something. So check all bushings and joints in the steering and front-end.

If you have any questions please ask.

You may try either a short phillips or a 90 degree phillips for cramped spaces works well. Ideal if someone was holding the steering wheel to remove these.
