I just changed the oil in my Massey 165 and put in a new fuel filter. I did not prime the filter just put in in and tried to start it. It fired right up then died. Will not start now, can anyone tell me what I did wrong. I just got this old tractor and I'm not familiar with it. Thanks

I'm assuming you have the diesel...you need to re-prime the fuel system after you change a fuel filter...

Yes its a diesel. How do you prime it. It will not fire at all right now.

This is a total swag based upon my ownership of a diesel pickup.
Fill the filter with diesel and remount it. There should be a valve close to the filter for draining off water, and a couple more valves along the fuel line. They may be a schrader looking valve with a cap. Bump the starter to energize the fuel pump (here I go assuming you have an electric fuel pump) and crack the valve closest to the pump. Make sure you get a squirt of diesel. Move on to the next valve and repeat. When you've gone all the way down the line, give it a try. Still may take 30 or more seconds to start. Hope this helps. If not, trade it for a JD with a self priming fuel system. LOL |

Look in your manual...
You should have a couple of bleed screws that you'll need to open...NOT take out...just open... ![]() and you should have a manual lever for pushing the fuel through...on John Deere's they are on the fuel pump... Unfortunately, since you have turned it over...you will probably need to open the bleeds on your injectors...to get the whole system full of fuel again...again you'll have to check your manual as I have no tech literature for MF...

Always fill your filter w/ fuel, oil the rubber gasket(like you would on an oil filter). I've got a complete manual for my MF180, and i think it has the 165 in it also. I'll look tomorrow. But i would refill the filter, look for bleeder valves. but you may have to crack each injector line(just a little). Start with the one the furthest from the pump. Crack the line open, turn tractor over until it has a flow with very little, or no air bubbles. Close and move on to the next line. But it would be nice to see if there is bleeder screws to start with. Now that i said that, I am no mechanic. Truck driver with a big garage and just enough tools to tear stuff almost completely apart. Than i get a few beers and go get a mechanic. But i have started quite a few old diesels' that way. The fun time to do this is when it's sub-zero. Not fun.
