Default Oil, Plug, Filter For New X300? Help!

Hello, all,

With all the terrific input on this forum, I finally bought my first JD (X300). I am absolutely thrilled with the quality, and couldn't be happier.

I have been going through the manual, and want to keep on top of everything. Maybe its just me, but I can't find any info on the type of oil to use other than a plug for magical JD fluids. I called the salesman and he said I can only use the special JD stuff.

If they really are the only thing to use, I will. But I find the owners manual extremely vague. What type of oil? 30 weight? 10W30? Which spark plug? I could only find gap info. What kind of lubricants/grease? Oil filter? Air filter?

I can't just walk into an auto parts store for plugs or filters and say its for a John Deere, fix me up!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dustman

Congratulations on the x300!! Nice!
Page 31 of your manual. 10W-30. SJ or higher. Of course JD dealer wants you to buy the JD oil!! As far as the filter goes, I would buy the JD filter since they are cheap enough.

I have a X320 and also a LX277 I use John Deere Turf Gaurd 10w30 I buy a case.I also use the John Deere filters and stock up and have a few extra on hand. How often will you be changing the oil and filter?I feel a few dollars extra ones or twice a year is not bad.I do it for convinece my self and warranty reasons.Hard for them to say it was because of the oil if it is there own.Hard for them to say it was the filter if it was there own.Might not mean a thing but for a few extra dollars a year im not going to worry about it.Besides all oil filters just because they look a like are the right filter.Im not going to trust the kid at auto zone or the gearhead hillybilly at Napa to be 100%sure its the right filter just to save a few dollars.

As for sparkplugs my 2003 LX277 with the same engine as yours 180 hours still has the factory plugs. When I decide its time to replace them I will just stop by the Deere dealer and get a set.Probably in a few more years.

Hello, RichR, johndeere, KeithB78 & farmer69! Thanks to all of you for responding!

I didn't know I had any responses yet (I'm kind of new to the forum) and I thought I would get an email if I got any responses), and had a devil of a time finding my original post this morning and there all of you were!

I knew the forum wouldn't let me down! It seems like everyone is friendly and quick to help with good ideas and information. Looks like I will be taking a trip to the JD dealer today! LOL

Thanks again for all you terrific information!
