Question white vinegar vs round up

A co-worker told me to save my money on buying Round Up and just use white vinegar. Has anyone used white vinegar with good results? I though for $1.95 for a gallon why not give it a shot. A week later I don't see any results with the vinegar. Round Up has always done a heck of a job killing anything and everything.

Do you want anything to grow in the area later? If not, try household bleach.

no not really, but i wouldn't mind getting rid of the weeds and throwing down grass at some point.

I read the same a few years back and tried it. You are missing one key ingredient: 3 cups of salt per gallon of vinegar. We used this as a pet-safe vegetation killer. It does work, but you need to apply it heavier than commercial killers, and more often.

I used straight vinegar on weeds in the driveway and poison ivy in back of the garden and it worked great.only took afew days to work, too. Maybe it depends on the weeds ??

My experience with Round Up is that it unreasonable expensive and only lasts about half the summer. I have been using bleach, as good a results and I can buy a tanker of bleach for what a couple of gallons of Round Up costs.

I haven't tried vinegar on weeds yet but I've had great success using it on ant hills. It takes a few applications but it works as well as any ant poison that I've tried.

I used 1 gal vinegar, 2/3 cup salt, & a healthy squeeze of dish soap on my poison ivy last weekend and much of it has turned brown and dried up. Gonna up the dose to 2 cups salt and re-treat the remaining this weekend if the rain holds off.

Try horticultural vinegar -- 10% to 20% acidity. Add 1 to 2 ounces of orange oil per gallon. Spray on weeds and unwanted vegetation on a warm, sunny day.

Safe and environmentally friendly!

The important active ingredient in round up is no longer under patent. You can get the performance of round up in a much cheaper concentrate. Great thing for me as I have a lot of weeds to kill.

Throwing salt on your ground can have a negative effect. Remember that Hannibal invaded Africa and salted the earth so they could not grow crops. Salt inhibits growth by taking up available water.

I stand corrected on that Hannibal thing, but hey that was 45 years ago and I can hardly remember yesterday!
