Default Kohler Pro...Command or Courage

I just bought a 2005 DGT 6000 with a 27HP Kohler Pro engine. My question is, is this engine a command or a courage. I will now put the Scotts L2548 up for sale. I should get a decent price, it only has 133 hrs.

Kohler makes a Command engine, and a Courage engine.

Then they make a mosre costly Command PRO and Courage PRO with special features like a hardened crank journal, larger air and oil filters, etc..

Then they make an engine for Craftsman, can be a command or courage, and is labeled as a "Kohler PRO".

If the air filter is up on top of the frotn of the engine, and is under a snap down plastic cover, it is a courage.

If the filter is on the front of the engine, and is round, it is the command engine.

These "Kohler PRO" engines are not Command PRO or Courage PRO engines, just marketing from sears.

You could look your engine model number up on Kohlers web site to be sure. I looked at a Sears today and all of the riders I saw except one had the Courage engines. I put a Command in mine like the one it originally had - http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=66771.

The Commands are supposed to be a step up.

tpaul,

I have the same tractor. It says only PRO on the engine, but if you look on the left side of the engine, you can find the model number. Mine has a CV740 which is a Command Pro.

I have a 2004 Sears DGT6000. Here is a pic of my breather cover. Actually it is off my old blown engine. It was a CV740-0024. My new engine is a CV740-0018 but it does not come with decals from Kohler factory so I swapped covers. I held camera wrong so had to flip pic so that is why date upside down.

That's the same decal that's on the GT5K Im looking at...except 25hp.

It's funny it says larger air, oil and fuel filters.

But the fuel filter that comes on these things is the craftsman special..nothing really superior capacitance wise.

The air filter out of a non-pro standard Command fits the housing, same size.

The Oil filter is about 1" taller, but then you can buy that same filter tight next to the standard filter at your local dealer.

Nothing they are advertising there is not something you can put on a "non-pro" Command...

Why they call it "PRO" is beyond me.

The oil filter still needs to be changed with the oil, and if you are plugging up an oil filter in 50 hours, you seriously have major problems.

The air filter seems identical, cant find a dimensional difference. A taller filter wouldnt fit under the cover and let the cover mount right. A larger diameter filter wouldnt fit.

Might be a hair thicker, but it till has to fit the sealing cap, and the lip in the filter back.

Fuel filter, Kohler may supply the engines with a larger filter, but it sure looks like the same fitler that comes on most other Kohler engines...There is a larger capacity filter avaialble, but again...if you are plugging it up so much you need a larger filter, you really need to clean your fuel tank bad.

Its a Command. I looked it up on the Kohler website. I read here somewhere that some kohler twins had head gasket problems. How can i find out if the tractor i bought has a problem engine? Its the same as Searsman6000.
Searsman6000, what happened that you had to get a new engine? How many hours was on the old engine? I'm concerned I bought a future problem.

WOW Searsman6000, i just saw your other post. You had Big Red down to the last nut and bolt. One thing i noticed about mine is that its very loud. The muffler is there but its loud and it seems the tin cover that directs the exhaust to the front is not on properly. Its leaking exhaust out the sides between the screws and sounds really weird. Kind of a tinny sound.

Bought it with blown engine. Looks like previous dipstick didn't know how to read the oil dipstick. The hour meter had 122 hours on it.

2 year later update. One of the head gaskets blew last year. I changed both using the kits from Kohler. Now it runs like a top. I greased the deck mandrels a few times and they still take grease and none squeezes out?? I made a bracket for the back to mount a 2" ball to move my utility trailer. This tractor is my workhorse. I normally use the others to cut grass. At the end of last fall I purchased another craftsman tractor. Its has a kohler courage twin and a 54" deck with a foot pedal hydro trans. I use that to cut 1.5 acres in PA.

Tpaul, might be a burnt exhaust valve...ive seen it on 2 25hp horizntal commands, and a 20 horizontal....I deal with the horizontals since we(the family) uses them in tractor pulling....Also the 25 was supposedly plagued with head gasket problems do to the original head studs...Thats what the local mower shop told us...We ALWAYS use the regular bolts(that came from a high performance engine builder of commands) when replacing gaskets as they have more holding power....My uncle has a 25hp command that cranks 10,000rpms and has over 200lbs of compression and uses the STOCK command head bolts..but he dumped the stock gaskets for copper(they are like $42 I think from the aftermarket)
