Default NEw (OLD) Sears SS16 Onan Tractor

Just about ready to start a restoration on a 1974 Sears SS16 Onan Engine Package. I has not ran in years... but not sure where to start. DO I start replacing everything... gaskets, carb, rebuild transmission??? To get it to run, I would have to hope the carburator worked... and dont think it does, at least not good? How do you see what I have to work with? Should I take it to a shop and pay to see what I have to work with?/ Suggestions?? Buzz

Does the engine turn over at all, by hand?

Buzz,

Thanks for the pics. I love these old machines, can't wait to get one of my own.

Good luck, and you'll get plenty of advice from the experts around here.

I wouldn't worry,I have an 25 HP Onan twin very similar a friend traded me for a winch and some work--it had sat 15 years in his shed when I got it,and it sat 5 more in my garage, before I finally tried getting it running,to try and use ,to run a huge air compressor..I figured the carb would be junk, but it wasn't

I did not even have to take it off or clean it--it started after cranking it over about 15 times on choke, and it did flood once--after it ran about 30 seconds I heard it start smoothing out a lot better--I added some fuel system cleaner and marvel mystery oil to the gas,and it ran great for an hour or more..(I just pray it runs as good next time I go to run it,after sitting another 5 years since then!--the air compressor project was abandoned)..

I've had to get a few Onan's on motor home generators going after long neglected periods of non-use,and it was not diffucult to clean the carb, getting them OFF while in that cubby hole compartment was the worst part of the job..some have cork floats that are likely to be very fragile, and possibly no good, they tend to get "heavy" and sink with age,gas soaks into them...a brass one is a lot better...these engines were made for heavy duty industrial use,and can take abuse and long "downtime" pretty well..but if its been left out to the weather, anything will need restoration of course..

Looks like you found a diamond in the rough!..I'm very tempted to put my Onan on a parts Suburban I bought that originally had one on it,as far as I can tell,by the chassis being different where the engine mounts to it..but I'll need a second parts tractor to complete it,its missing a lot of things..

I've got the same model tractor, but it has a slightly newer Onan engine (B43M series). Mine has a diaphram fuel pump on the carb, so getting a factory carb rebuild kit really helps. I ended up having to go to a Cummins truck dealer to get the Onan carb rebuild kit. I love the way mine runs. It will push or pull up til you lose traction.

Also, it looks like your hood is still intact. There is probably a wire rope section stringing between the hood that opens and the base frame. This is very important, as it is the hood support and takes the weight of the hood in the open position. The fiberglass hood section will break if this isn't there. I've seen this on almost every other Sears of this era.

Good luck with the restoration. Post some more pics when you can.

As hard as it is--try very hard to get everything in good running condition prior to any restorial stuff.Once you've done that you will have a good base to work from plus you will have learned how and where things are and how to fix or replace them.I have done it myself,"Oh,I'll remember how that goes on."--NOT---Do it the right way and you'll enjoy it more. All it cost is hundreds of dollars, months of time, use of all the tools you own now plus countless trips for more, hours on the computor bidding wayyy too much on the last part on earth, and most important--bucket loads of knuckle-meat!!But **** we all do it,man-up,take pics.and keep us posted,we love it!!

You're going to love that thing when you hear it run for the first time! I know I did when mine started. I must have been lucky with mine because it had been sitting under a tarp for God knows how long before I got it. After charging the battery, and checking that the wiring was all hooked up, I turned the key, shot some starter fluid in the carb, and it fired! I've rebuilt the carb, and fuel pump, but never have checked the points other than to take the cover off to see that there isn't any crud under it. Darn thing absolutely purrs.

This guy here has a huge library of manuals for the Suburban line.

Good luck with yours, and have fun.

Do you have 2 nipples on your pump ? If so you maybe able to block the broken one and drill a hole in the other nipple.

If not you can buy a rebuild kit and you get that part. 70 bucks or so.

What are you asking for the elec. hitch ?
