Default Opinion poll

18HP single or 20 Hp twin??

Thinking about going brand new on a new lawn tractor...just for grass cutting...the 990 will handle the heavy stuff..I'm leaning towards the 20 hp Husky or the 18 hp Cub ...both are 42" cut.

Well personally I'd have to go with the twin over a single, especially if there was any hills to be mowed

A twin is better for those loaded conditions (full bagger, sweeper, hills). Remember it better to have and not need. I have a twin 16 on my bolens St160 and it's more than enough.

Advantage twin; smoother running, sounds better.

Advantage single; less moving parts, less to go wrong, better fuel economy.

If I had to choose today, with gas at $4.00 this summer, I might go with the single, but you can't deny that a twin sounds better, runs smoother, and just feels like it has more power.

I'll go against the grain here and say single. Reasons? I have a Cub Cadet dealer nearby for parts. I wouldn't really know where to get the Huffy serviced or get parts. I also like the less fuel used by a single.

I like my twin. However,,,,, I havent put it under any real strain yet. No plow, snow blower, tiller etc. Just a 48" deck and a 42" sweeper.

I don't think you will be happy with either one of your choices after having the MTD 990 as they are not built anyway near the 990. slkpk

thats for sure but if its simply for lawn mowing that could be a good thing.the 990 needs 2 lawns to turn around in and being older they do require tinkering.dont get me wrong i love my 990 but it is definately a garden tractor not a lawn mower.

I will also go against the grain of the majority line of thought in this instance. I believe that a single will have the torque and rpms required to mow the heavy stuff as well as pull the hills and will initially cost less and run for less fuel over the years less to repair in the long run. If you want the sound and smoothness of the twin then belly up.

My Kohler CV15 was a pretty big single I thought and that tractor never bogged down in thick grass. But it did without question feel less smooth than my V-twin. A 18hp single is a monster, kinda curious what that would sound like. My Onan twin is sweet, it sounds different than any twin or single I've owned. I don't know what I would pick, since its just for cutting grass, doesn't much matter I suppose. Singles of that size are going to use a lot of fuel too.

My land is all hills where I mow. I've never had an lt with over 17 hp and never had an lt with more than 1 cylinder and never had a problem mowing or bagging.
