Default Montgomery Ward Garden Mark Squire 12

I picked up a Garden Mark Squire 12 last weekend for free. I think it's a really neat looking tractor with a really wide stance (will look great with some 26x12x12 ags on it). It also has a sleeve hitch and hydraulics. I even picked up the dozer blade that goes with it. Anyway, I have no info on this tractor and can't seem to find much on the net. Does anyone know anything about these tractors? LInks to parts dealers, manuals, decals, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Photos or numbers would help.

I have a 1969 squire 16 which is probably in the ball park. Made by gilson I think.

Mine has the deck & a tiller, plus some really awfull looking red brush paint by the previous owner. Square hood with bug eye headlights.

ABC...could you please send me some close-up pics of the decals on this Squire? Could use some good pics of them for making a fellow some decals. His decals are mostly gone & not much for me to go by. I would appreciate it if you could/would. My email to use is tractordecals@scrtc.com if you could do this for me. Your decals appear to be complete.

I have a Montgomery Ward tractor sitting in my garage, that a friend wanted me to fix up for him--circa 1978 I guess,a Gilson made one, with a rare rear discharge 38" deck too,and an 11 hp vertical Briggs for a power plant..it's in real decent shape considering it's age...

I have to get the guy who owns it to make up his mind--first he wants me to fix it up,so I get it running, and find it needs both of the belts for the deck and tranny, the deck belt had flipped over, and the tranny belt is all petrified and cracking -- (it has a 3 speed peerless transaxle)..and it had a seized up idler pulley on the deck, but I freed it up with some oil and heat, and it did mow some of my lawn before the blade drive v belt rolled over in the pulley grooves..

...it's a 96" long belt, and any over 60" are usually very expensive and rather hard to find locally, and the guy is balking at "spending any money"--it needs a front tire too,but all I have are dry rotted junk just like his,unfortunately....I'd have to pull off and measure the tranny belt, its not listed in my Dayco belt catalog, only the mower deck one is..(kinda strange?)..

The guy wanted to fix it up for his dad,who he originally bought this tractor for,in '78--but he's now 96 years old,and prefers his Wheel Horse/Toro 16/38sxl because it has a pedal operated hydrostat, and he cant use a clutch pedal anymore!..the Wheel Horse keeps trashing the blade belt with nearly every use,he runs over EVERYTHING with it-I've found speedometer cable, barbed wire, and a lot of other stuff wound around the blades every time I change the belt for him!..I suppose his eyes aren't so hot at his age..

Been sitting in my garage since June ,and now I need room for winter--so I'll have to discuss whether this guy really wants to fix it up,or just see if he can get a free indoor storage site for the winter ??..he did say he wants to fix it up tp "use around his used car lot"--but the sit down mower I fixed for him last year has sat out behind the building there, and rotted into the ground since, never used it once!..maybe I'll end up with this thing,I dont know!..I would like to get it out of my garage!..or add it to my collection perhaps!..

Barnabas Collins,

My tractor looks just like the one in your picture as far as I can tell. I'll try to post some pics tomorrow. I have never done that so we'll see if I can figure it out. I don't have any numbers. No data plate on the tractor and I don't have the engine cooling shroud. I did talk with the guy that gave it to me today and he says he's found the shroud so I'm gonna go pick it up tomorrow. I was hoping someone could just give me a model number for the old Briggs and maybe some links to sources where I can buy parts.

That photo was one I found on the web. Here are a couple photos of mine.

olcowhand, I'm sending some photos of the decals on mine. They are all intact though not all in great shape. I can give you dimensions if you need them.

That was actually a photo I got off the web. Here are a few of mine.

Olcowhand, I'm sending some photos. All the decals are intact, though not near pristine. The brush painter must have missed them on purpose. Too bad he didn't miss the whole thing. If you need some straight on shots of any, just let me know.

Had developed a bad surge and I decided to stop using it and go through it for a restoration..2 years ago. So far I've just stopped using it. Aren't these tires supposed to leak by now?

Mine has extensions on the stubby fenders the smaller HP versions have, It also has a plastic "nose" that is broken. The regular ones didn't have it either. I'm not sure what all transmissions they have but mine is a 4 speed with varidrive.

Tag is on the right side of the tractor frame, mines held on by tabs bent into 2 holes. engine numbers may be stamped on the shroud or on a decal, I forget exactly.
