He heard something under the hood rubbing? No doubt he couldn't find any Drygas, acetone, Bardahl, Wizzer Myserie Oil, SPT, Mower Honey, possum pee or bat vomit. People will put anything in a gas tank that they think "works"... Sometime all it takes is "...I heard..."

My guess is he thinks it will help. I'm not so sure.

He may have got some water in his tank. Alcohol will help rid the tank of water without really damaging the vehicle. Thats what i have been told. May or may not be true.

back in highschool a friend had an alcohol racing motor in his truck. every fill up he had to add a couple bottles to the tank.

as far as it getting rid of water in the gas, both alcohol and gasoline are lighter than water. neither would do much other than force all the water to teh bottom.

Well, if you must know...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isopropyl_alcohol#Uses

"Isopropanol is a major ingredient in "dry-gas" fuel additive. In significant quantities, water is a problem in fuel tanks as it separates from the gasoline and can freeze in the supply lines at cold temperatures. The isopropanol does not remove the water from the gasoline. Rather, the isopropanol solubilizes the water in the gasoline. Once soluble, the water does not pose the same risk as insoluble water as it will no longer accumulate in the supply lines and freeze..."

The use of ethanol (up to 10% by volume) mixed with gasoline at the pumps does the same thing, not sure if adding any other dry-gas product would do anything more than what's in gas now. Has anyone heard of gas lines freezing in the last few years? My understanding is, with ethanol in our gas, dry-gas is a waste of money.

adding alcohol depends on what kind of fuel system the vehicle has. Water in a fuel injection system rarely presents a problem. However, if it was older car with a carburator and depending on the design of the float bowl adding alcohol will help pass the water through the system. I have an old Jeep with a rochester 2 bbl carb., the jets are at the bottom of the carb. Any amount of water in the gas , because the water settles to the bottom of the bowl, makes it stumble and stutter like Mel Tillis. A bottle of rubbing alcohol fixes the problem every time.

"I Heard" - we're getting alcohol in the gas now so the gasoline companies can sell us a little water mixed in @ $4.00 a gallon.

Cool Re: Tell Me Why ? (rubbing Alcohol)

If you ever want to impress someone or suggest a science project for one of your little ones, have them fill two glasses, one almost full to the top with water and the other one almost full with pure (Most rubbing alcohol is a 70% or 92% variety.) alcohol. Then have them pour one glass into the other glass and the contents will NOT spill over.

I would think if you were doing this, you would find some 100% isopropyl. Rubbing alcohol (as mentioned above) is typically 70% alcohol and 30% WATER. Sounds like he had the right idea but the wrong product.

Ethanol (or any alcohol base) is NOT soluble with petroleum distalates. They (the refineries) have to centrifuge the ethanol into the fuel so that it is evenly disbursed. If a vehicle (like a boat) sits too long then the ethanol phase seperates and starts to absorb massive quantaties of water (what alcohol does best).

It's garbage and I feel the President of the united states should be sued for forcing the garbage on us. Ethanol has and will continue to do more harm than it does good.. It's no better than MTBE was.
