I just picked up a C10A walk behind tractor. I have a question about the controls. On the left handle, there is the lever that is labeled Hi-Lo. This tractor also has the hi-lo control on the right side, on the dash. The lever on the right side changes ground speed, the control on the left side does not seem to change ground speed. Does the left side control change the implement speed?

The C10 and C10A is the first Gravelys to use a Kohler engine, the lever on the handle should change the tractor ground speed and the implement speed, the one on the dash shifts the ground speed only giving the tractor a total of four speeds in both directions, and called 8 speed.

That handy dash lever (2 speed axle) replaced the "Gear Reduction Wheels" which took a bit of time to install/uninstall. They made a true "beast" out of a mild mannered "L" though!

I'm not familiar with C10, but if the tranny is the Swiftmatic, then yes, the one lever is for speed range only, but the other should control the speed of both the PTO and the tractor, because even with the PTO disengaged, you have to have it on one position or the other (I know - the tractor will move if it is left in neutral - but not uphill!)
Anyway, both my tractors - the 430 and the L8 have the swiftmatic and the gear lever that controls PTO speed also changes tractor speed - to a smaller degree than the range lever, but it is noticeable. That change in PTO speed is one of my favorite things with the Gravelys - in the low gear, PTO is moving slower, but NOTHING seems to bog it down in that range... |

Thanks for the replies guys. I had a chance to use the tractor last night after work, I mowed down some tall grass, got used to the controls, awsome machine, I'm going to like this machine...

Putting the PTO in high makes it spin faster, but if you do start to bog down, put it in low - it will hold it's speed through even heavier stuff.
Also, if you're clearing brush, it tends not to throw stuff quite as far or as rapidly, so it's a bit safer. |
