I've got about 7 hours on the 6500 - just about time for the 10 hour oil change. I was at home depot, so I picked up an oil filter for $11.99. Is that a crazy price or what? Is that the going rate for a Kohler oil filter?

Seems as if some price gouging may be involved there for something made in asia but when Briggs 12 horse air filters are $16.00 it may make you feel a little better.

10 hour oil change? I thought the recommended first oil change for the 6500 was at 50 hours.

I guess the real question that needs to be asked is are those filters supposed to come packaged with vaseline!
I would go to NAPA and have them look up a filter that will fit. After you get a NAPA number its easy to cross reference to other filters. No way would I pay that much for a filter for such. There "IS" a suitable and perfectly serviceable filter out there at a much lower price. There was a place n New York, Mow Mor or something or other that had some good prices on OEM filters as well as other aftermarket filters for all the popular engines......NAPA can certainly find a sub filter.

I just know someone here has the NAPA or PUrolator or other numbers that are for a suitable flter to fit that enigne. IIRC there used to be a sticky in the lube oil section that had a few different cross referrence numbers for various filters listed. If its gone it would be god t have it redone.
My JD dealer charges $12.xx for the filters for the Kawasaki engines such as the 17 and 20 hp models. I found that Toyota filters are perfect swap and my local Toyota dealer has them for 3 for $10 or 4 for $12 on sale 99% of the time....Advance Auto has Purolators for $3.99 and $4.99 for the Pure One Gold. Just no way are those filters worth that kind of money.

Just hop on the NAPA website dogwood and plug in the non-napa part number.
It spit something out you can use. I paid $12 at my Cub dealer for a Briggs Vanguard and then paid $10 something at Lowes for a Briggs that will fit an Onan. Napa makes a good filter, and they are a lot cheaper. http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPage...PartNum=491056 or http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPage...artNum=5205002

I think NAPA uses WIX filters labeled NAPA. Just look at their "clone" filter finders, and the way the numbering system of their filters run.....all thats different is the name and colors.

thanks for the tips. I knew there had to be someplace who could sell that oilfilter cheaper than $11.97.
A few posts back UglyRed questioned the 10 hour oil change. seems as though the standard for a new machine is to change the oil after 5 or 10 hours and then every 50 hours. Is that the accepted practice? |

Whats the recomended interval from the owners manual for the first oil change? Of course it does not hurt a thing to change it early, but 10 hours is sufficeint IMHO on a machine that has pressurized oil lube system w/filter. Surely there is not going to be any junk in there that is going to clog up or starve the engine for lube within those 10 hours.....Since break in oil is not really used, there really is no being need to dump whats in the engine sooner. It can take lots longer than 10 hurs of operation time to break it in, and in that 10 hours that oil is certainly not worn out, nor is that filter unserviceable. I would pay more attention to how that motor is run and operated, and change the oil at factory recomendation.

For lawn tractor oil filters, here's a thread from BobistheOilGuy dot com that has *lots* of part numbers listed for inexpensive substitutes. My post is #6 in the thread. And FWIW- the filters listed should fit & work just fine on any Briggs, Kohler, Kawasaki & other air-cooled gasoline engines that require a filter. So far, *All* I've read up on take the "small-diameter" filters with a 3/4"-16 thread. Save yourself some buk$, it's much better to get 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 oil filters for $12 than to spend that much money for one filter!

Does anyone else think it's a good idea to use the specified oil filter until the warranty is up? Seems like this would be something where the manufacturer would deny an engine claim if the wrong filter was used...
Just curious on opinions here.
