Default Repair Questions for YM 2210

Hey gang - I'm new to the forum and a bit mechanically challenged - can do routine maintenance service, but that's about all. Picked up a YM 2210 as part of a property purchase and have a couple of questions for the group.

1. Previous owner had an owners manual for YM195/240 model. Seems to address basic operation and service. Is there a more specific manual in English for the YM2210?

1. The Yanmar Owners website talks about cleaning the transmission filter screen, but I cannot seem to locate it on this model from their description?

2. The hourmeter no longer runs (though RPM gauge works fine). Any ideas how to diagnose/repair?

3. The charging indicator lamp stays on (RED) during operation. Tractor runs just fine - always starts - no apparent problems with battery in over 3 seasons. Possible false reading due to some minor electrical problem with the lamp unit?

4. Engine temp gauge does not appear to work - i.e. needle does not move from C to mid-gauge marks, except when engine is overheating then it immediately jumps to H and the coolant temp lamp goes on. I'm not really worried about it, but might there be a simple fix to the gauge?

5. Engine appears to knock loudly after initial startup and at lower rpm (1000). Yet sounds OK after brief warmup and operation at working rpm (2300). Is this the nature of some 2 cyl diesel engines or sign of problem?

Thanks in advance for you replies!

i was looking at a 2210 when i bought my 1610d
the guy cranked it up and it also had a noisy knock
he said that was normal for a 2 cyl. i didn't like it
so i went with the 1610d.

Welcome Kevin

I'm not familiar with your model or where you are located but here goes.

Lot of the Yanmars have an indicator light for electrolyte level in the battery. No batteries like this in the US. Don't recall if the connections for this indicator need to be left OPEN or shorted together so the light stays off. Could this be the lamp you are refering to?

I'm sure there are English manuals available for your model but if they are anything like mine they're not the greatest, translations of Japanese manuals. There is good info but not as complete as I'd like to see.

As for the hr meter and I'm assuming it is part of the tach, I suspect you will need to replace the complete meter. Shouldn't be hard to find a servicable used one from a rep dealer.

Temp gauge, sound like a bad sending unit but remote possibility of bad connection at the sending unit.

As to where you can get parts and help, one of the good guys in the gray market arena is Ernie and you can find him here http://www.ernies.net/Current.htm Bought my tractor from him and have no hesitation to recommend him to others. I'm sure at some point Mark will chime in and will also tell you Ernie is a good dealer to deal with. Mark will also be able to give you the name of several others in other locations in the country.

Come Back ya hear!

Kevin, Sorry I missed your post.

The YM2210 was perhaps one of the best 22 PTO and 25 engine HP models Yanmar built. The start-up and low RPM knock, known as the “Yanmar Hammer” is typical of this and most other two cylinder diesel engines. You’re going to love the Powershift transmission.

If you follow the large return (suction) line from the pump to the bottom rear of the tractor you will see it bolts from the tube flange to the transmission sump. Undo the two (or three) bolts and you’ll find a stainless fine mesh screen. Clean with carb and choke cleaner, fresh diesel or gasoline. Drain the hydraulic oil first and make sure you have a container that will hold about five gallons.

It is extremely rare for the tachometer and cable to operate and not the hour meter. The hour meter is calculated to operate at variable RPM’s so, the faster the engine speed the more likely you’ll see the hour meter work…and at idle or below 800 RPM’s it may take a full day to see any movement whatsoever.

The engine temp gauge sender may be grounding out or loose wire. You may want to check pulley belt tension and fuse holder block for corroded contacts too.

Like Mickey said, your gauge may indicate a battery water sensor and it’s commonly confused with the charging light. I agree with his recommendation with Ernie.

Hopefully you’ll come back and let us know how everything works out with the tractor.

Sounds like the Temp gauge reciver is air-locked... It waits untill the metal is hot before reading... Remove and check for dirt blocking the water from touching it...

If you have GAUGES rather than warning lights you have a 2210B and not a 2210. Same mechanically otherwise.

Welcome skeetjunkie,

As Wayne said, you may have the 2210B. Does your dash look like this ?
Photo borrowed from Murray Manual, I think they have one for the 2210.

Gents - in response to your most excellent replies above:

1. Yes that is the photo of my dash
2. The hourmeter has not budged in two years of grass cutting and mulch hauling. It's no big deal, but thought there might be an easy repair.
3. The Battery Water Level lamp is the one always lit up - I now understand why its irrelevant for me
4. I'll check temp gauge sender and receiver
5. I see where the transmission filter screen is located

Will let u guys know how it works out. again...Chef Kevin

On my 2020 the Battery Water Level wires were 2 brown wires that hung loose ended in the battery area. Tied the two ends together and no more Battery Water Level light glaring in my face.

Hey, very nice.

I'm seeing two tractors right? A YM1700 AND a YM2020...I'm also seeing rice and turf tires on the 2020.

Excellent fit and finish...Did you do the paint work? Your loader has the 10° advance on the upright towers...lots of people doing this rather than chopping off 3" of the front frame and bumper...done it myself on occasion.

Great looking tractors and thanks for sharing the pics.

All I did on the paint was touch up the green some and paint the wheels. I bought the 2020 with idea of having to paint the red but wound up buffing it and it really came out. The rice and cane tires were before I got the turf tires, I still have them stored.

The Loader was actually for and on the 1700 at one time. When I got the 2020 I wanted to put in on it. I had to lean the towers and cut about 2" of the front frame and reinstall front bumper, It works good.

Gizmo, you and I were posting at the same time, check my last post. The 2020 really looked bad and faded when I bought it.
