Default Where to start on a tractor thar has been sitting 8 years

Now that I have got this tractor home its time to figure out what next. Its been sitting for 8 years. Iam guess the carb will need a rebuild (Gas). Iam not sure what to do with the gas tank. Ive been told the flywheel has a bad spot on it.My guess is I should get it running to make sure its worth the split. What else should I look at?

Well always a good idea to pull the plugs, get some oil in there and let it soak a little. Drain the oil out, and put some fresh oil in there. After the oil has soaked a bit try turning the motor over. Keep the plugs out BTW. Drain all the gas, clean the carb and put some fresh gas in. As long as it turned over with the plugs out, I would reinstall some, and she what happands.

Thanks, that makes it easier to understand what you are dealing with

Like Paul said, pull the spark plugs and get some penetrating oil in there. Start the plugs back in and let it sit for a while. While it is soaking, clean all the electrical contacts needed for your ignition circuit. Rebuild your carb. Clean out the sediment bowl (if it has one) Make sure you can get the transmission into Neutral. After 3 or 4 days, see if you can get the engine to turn by putting a socket with a breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley. If it will turn, pull the spark plugs back out, and put some Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders. Crank it over with the socket again to coat the cylinder walls. Put a good tune up on the tractor, and change the oil. Make sure there is water/antifreeze in the cooling system. Install a good battery, and see what happens

Check the hyrdrolic fluids to see what they look like...Milky white means that they are water contaminated..

If you can't fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem!

Thanks to Jim Rome for turning me on to PB Blaster. While I doubt his hands have ever laid on a can, his ads are right. It loosens stuff and does a good job. For years I was using WD40 and for light apps its ok, but pb is the stuff for all tough jobs.
