Default D140 w/ 1.6 hours - Smoke on Startup???

Ok, I didn't find anything "just" like this so I'll ask the question. Is it normal for a new (almost) D140 to smoke like this when started?

Anything I should be doing when seeing this? Thanks for advice and experience. Otherwise, everything is working great.

Ok, I'm not as good as I thought. I took a video of the smoke at startup because it did it last time also. But, the file is too huge to upload. So I took a screen shot of it paused.

An little smoke at start-up is normal when the choke is used.

The rings probably haven't fully seated yet, it will diminish as it gets more hours on it.

While it's doubtful it'd be the same problem I had, it's an easy fix if it is.

My '08 LA125 with 98HRS was smoking while mowing and at startup. It turned out being a blown head gasket. I got it fixed easily in one night. Think it was about $12 at the dealer for both gaskets needed. Just looked online for how to videos posted on youtube and did it all myself.

You have warranty. Let the engine break in some and it should get better. Some smoke upon startup is normal. When my Poulan has been sitting for a few days, it will smoke for the first few minutes of running. No biggie.

On my X320, I found startup continues to get easier and cleaner. After 3 yrs and 138 hours, startup is smokeless I agree you probably just need the engine to break in and the rings to seat.

Congrats on your new D-140. That's an excellent machine for its intended purpose.

I'll offer you my experiences with my Intek twin, similar to yours, and now almost 10 years old. It has 425+ hours on it. Sometimes it smokes on startup but most times not. A hot start will NEVER blow smoke. When a cold start does smoke, it is just a brief event. Never noticed any drop in oil level, and the engine doesn't use oil between changes (~ yearly and 50 hours). The commonly accepted explanation is that the vertical shaft engines will draw a drop or two of oil into the cylinder on shutdown, depending on where the piston stops in the bore. I can buy that and it seems to fit with my experiences.

The other possibility is overfilling the crankcase oil. Then it will smoke on every startup and MAY smoke while running until it burns it down to a useable level. Since it's new, the dealer may have slightly overfilled during prep. For reference, there's about 8 oz between FULL and ADD, so it can get pretty low before you need to worry. There's 64 oz in a full oil change.

I'd give it a few more hours to break-in then revisit the issue. Check the oil level regularly to make sure there isn't a major problem lurking under the hood.

HTH,
Paul

I have a new one with a few hours on it. It did start some smoke at start up but I am not too concerned.
One bonus on buying a new one... My wife has mowed the last two weeks!

Forgot to mention. When my X320 was new, it was hard to start, and it smokes in cold start. I was a little concerned but didn't do anything about it. Now, it starts cold and hot smokeless, hot start is instantaneous, cold start takes about 1-2 sec. I know we have different engines, but I think breaking-in is the key.
