I suspect the motor mount tabs were broken ( as some do) and the oil pan was replaced.

Well with all the hubbub about the engine I went out and looked at it a little deeper. The bottom half of the air box is broken and has a hole in it so I need to replace that. The engine is a B48G and it still has points on it. I thought the city might have upgraded the electronics but I guess not. I would like to upgrade the electronics but as far as I can tell it's very expensive. I've looked at Kirk Engines and noticed they have a Pointsaver, anyone ever use this? Is there a better route to go with the electronics?

Later this week I hope to get a compression tester and test the compression.

One other problem I have is the fuel pump being used is a pump off an automobile. I would like to either rebuild the original pump or get a smaller Facet pump.

Here's some more pics.

Boomers_influence should be able to set you up with and air cleaner bottom.

Looking at the engine I am not sure about it being short blocked. Maybe just the oil pan was replaced. I think you would have to look at the internals to really find out if it was short blocked.

Not sure about wanting to go to electronic ignition. I think you might have to replace the timing cover since there are not a mounting location for the ignition module..... (I think being key) Boomer would be able to answer that question.

Hey LIA
Yep that is the sight glass. You want to get rid of those hose clamps as they will crush the glass tube and still not seal. You want to use the original JD spring style (the best option) or some really tiny zip ties (not as good but wwwwaaaayyyy better than the worm / gear style clamps). There is virtually no pressure in this hose so they do not need a lot of tension.
Did you get the rockshaft with your 420?
Good luck with your project.

Mebeef, thanks for the pointer on parts. Ill do more research on the ignition.

hgl1, Rockershaft? Is that for the 3-point hitch? All I have is what you see. There was a 250+ pound weight box on the back so there was no room for the 3-point hitch. Although it would be nice to have a 3 point on the back I will most likely put the weight box back on for snowblowing next winter.

Also, thanks for the tip on the sight glass.

The rock shaft is to lift the deck (which you do not have and this will just be a snow machine if I remember right) This is what the rockshaft looks like and it attaches where those two recesses are in the back of the frame rails.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/John-Deere-2...item1c305dd943

I am not sure, I think the 420 is a little wider than a 318 so be careful about which one you get. The one I posted says it from a 420.

Or you can buy a 3pt which comes with a rockshaft Then you can buy suitcase weights and then..... you get the picture John Deereitis can get severe real quick (I just wanted a 318, yet today it looked like my garage upchucked John Deere green on to the driveway)

Don't worry-the rockshafts/3 points are the same for the 318, 332, 330, 322, 430, 420, etc. I took the 420 3 point and mounted to my 332 and took my 332 rockshaft and put on the 420. The rear axles of a 430/420 also fit the 300 series tractor as well-they are just longer. The rear frame spacing is the same. Front-no so.

Sight tube-just replace with 1/4 inch clear hose as it does get brittle with time. The 420 I had-still said John Deere on the hose-but it basically shattered. You will need a lower PTO belt pulley for the front. Looking at it you need that and I think there is a guard as well that goes around the pulley as well. If this will only be a blade tractor neither the PTO nor the rear rockshaft are needed. But mowing you will need both.

Nothing wrong with keeping the points. They are fairly simple, rarely fail and are cheap to replace when you need to. But that's up to you

My Nephew has the points saver on his round fender 112.Works good. The previous owner installed it and said it now starts much easier with the points saver.

Thanks for all the replies. I would love to get a 3 point hitch and put suitcase weights on the back but I have seen how much those are and I would have more in the weights than I do in the 420. I will most likely go with a pointsaver. I am slowly acquiring a list of stuff that I want to get and will most likely start ordering stuff here in about a month. Sadly the list is getting long.

Here is the before and after pics I find most impressive with the cleanup.

Most of what you said is correct however you do not need the rear PTO for a mower unless you are going to run a rear 3 point mower / tiller or ????
The belly (MMM) mower runs off the back side of the front PTO shaft on a 420 so you will need to replace the pulley. I believe they are still available new and unless you get a really great deal on one I would go new. They all wear the splines. You will also need the regular rockshaft or 3 point rockshaft to lift the MMM.
Most of what you will run on these will drive from the front or mid PTO so unless you specificially need the rear PTO it will definitely finance a good amount of other repairs. Just remember to include all the clutch / wiring / switch and the rear PTO unit so it will be complete and you will get the most $ from it. The harness all unplugs from the tractor and you only need to make a small jumper wire for your tractor once you remove it. Clean it up and then start the bidding at $700.00 and see if gets any better. Some do.

I should have stated front PTO as that was what I meant since currently that is the onet that doesn't work. Thank you for making sure everyone else knows that as I would hate to have others buying rear PTO's due to miss information.

What are the full plans. I know you said a blower is a possble future (which you would need the Front PTO to work then). Any mowing in the future of this? Any rear implements? Garden?
